On Saturday, a Pennsylvania man was charged with shooting 11 people to death in a synagogue in Pittsburgh in what is considered the worst attack on Jews during the cult in US history.
    Before the attack, the alleged gunman posted a message on Gab, an open social media network launched in 2016. His use of Gab has put the service in the spotlight.
Here is what you need to know about Gab:
How it began?
Gab was launched in 2016 as an alternative to traditional platforms such as Twitter and Facebook. During that time, Twitter had suspended several accounts associated with the "alt-right" movement the same day he swore an offensive against hate speech. 
The suspensions pushed many people to Gab, which has fewer restrictions on what content users can post compared to Twitter and other social networks.
"Gab's mission is to put people and freedom of expression first," say the service's guidelines. "We believe that the only valid form of censorship is the decision of an individual to opt out."
Relaxed rules opened the door for content such as anti-Semitic publications and conspiracy theories. In August, according to The VergeMicrosoft threatened to stop hosting the social network in a couple of anti-Semitic publications, which were eventually eliminated.

How is the suspect connected in Pittsburgh?
Before entering the synagogue, an account that appeared to belong to the suspect Robert Bowers, 46, posted a message in Gab: "I can not sit down and watch my people get killed.
His profile also included multiple anti-Semitic comments and conspiracy theories, including one referenced in his last post stating that the HIAS organization, the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society, brought "invaders to kill our people."

How has Gab responded?
In a statement, Gab said he was "saddened and disgusted" by the Pittsburgh attack. "Gab took quick and proactive steps to contact the police immediately" the service said in a statement. "First we made a backup of all the user data of the account and then proceeded to suspend the account."
Efforts to close Gab
PayPal spokesman Justin Higgs said the payment service canceled Gab's account and that he was in the process of ending his account before the shooting. "The company is diligent in making revisions and taking actions into account," Higgs said. "When a site allows the perpetuation of hatred, violence or discriminatory intolerance, we take immediate and decisive action."
On Twitter, Gab said the payment processing service Stripe and the accommodation provider Joyent were going to ban the service. Representatives of Joyent could not be contacted immediately for comment. In a statement, Stripe said the company can not comment on individual users for privacy reasons.

In a statement, Gab said the behavior of Bowers and other users is not exclusive to their service. "Criminals and criminal behavior exist on all social media platforms."
