What evidence of a first moon orbiting a planet outside of our solar system means

Did the Hubble Space Telescope find evidence of the first moon to orbit a planet outside of our solar system? If so, it is a surprising discovery that changes our knowledge of the universe that surrounds us.

This discovery was made by two of NASA's most famous telescopes, Hubble and Kepler, which were used by two astronomers, Alex Teachey and David Kipping, of Columbia University. The two spent hundreds of hours analyzing data from 284 planets discovered by Kepler, which had more than 30-day orbits around their host star.

One of them, Kepler 1625b, was intriguing enough to justify time on the Hubble Space Telescope to investigate it in detail because its features suggested a moon.

The data they discovered indicate an exomoon the size of Neptune, in a star system 8,000 light years from Earth. While this is an exciting discovery, it is not yet confirmed, it will take more time on the Hubble Space Telescope to confirm this remarkable finding.

Astrophysicist Hakeem Oluseyi says that this could really change the way we see our solar system.

Now, the big question: is there anyone else out there?

"The discovery of all these planets and the understanding of how they were formed opens a new way to find life," Oluseyi told ABC News.

What is an exomoon?

It is a moon outside our solar system, that we can not see directly, but when it passes in front of a star, the light of that star dims, and thus it is detected.

What Hubble was able to do was provide evidence by tracing the planet and showing that it had crossed an hour earlier than expected, which, like the Earth and its Moon, shows a planet and a Moon orbiting a common center of gravity, with a little swing just like the earth
