Oddly rectangular icebergs are apparently not so rare.



	

	The world has recently taken a look at a gloriously sharp "tabular iceberg"In a photo taken by NASA scientist Jeremy Harbeck, taken during an October 16 research flight over the northern peninsula of Antarctica, the image went viral recently.

		Well, it turns out that Harbeck saw multiple tabular bergs floating in the frigid sea near the now famous that day. In fact, another rectangular iceberg (let's call it Tabular B, and the first Tabular A seen for simplicity) occupies a central place in a newly released photo.

This picture, taken during an IceBridge Operation flight over the northern Antarctic Peninsula on October 16, 2018, shows another relatively rectangular iceberg near the famous sharp-edged iceberg, which can be seen behind the plane's external engine. 		The new image also shows a corner of Tabular A hovering over an engine of Harbeck's plane, as well as the giant tabular iceberg known as A68 in the distance.

		A68, which is about the size of the state of Delaware, was detached from the Larsen C ice shelf in July 2017. Tabular A and Tabular B, along with a number of other similar bergs in the area, are products from that area. The same rupture, said NASA scientist John Sonntag in a recently released video showing footage of Harbeck flyover.

		"Actually, I was more interested in capturing the A68 iceberg we were about to fly over, but I thought that this rectangular iceberg was visually interesting and quite photogenic, so at least I took some pictures," Harbeck said. NASA statement on Tuesday (October 23).

		Harbeck is a senior support scientist with Operation IceBridge, a NASA project that examines polar ice from the air. (Sonntag is the IceBridge mission scientist). The Harbeck flight of October 16 originated in the city of Punta Arenas, in southern Chile. The flight was part of a five-week IceBridge "rollout" that is scheduled to run from October 10 to November 18, NASA officials said.

		Tabular icebergs break the edges of ice shelves. Bergs with surprisingly straight edges and sharp corners are relatively recent, since the erosive action of wind and waves has not yet had time to soften these characteristics.
