Watching television is associated with worse mental health in older women

It is known that young adults who spend more time sitting have a higher risk of depression. But until now, very few studies have evaluated older adults if sedentary life is also associated with worse mental health.

Nor, until now, had it been examined whether sedentary behaviors that require greater intellectual effort (such as reading or working with the computer) and passive sedentary behaviors (such as watching television) are associated in a different way with mental health.

To clarify this issue, researchers from the Autonomous University of Madrid (UAM) and CIBERESP (Spain) conducted a study with 2,614 people over 60 years of age participating in the ENRICA-Seniors cohort.

The participants were interviewed in 2012, when information was collected on their sedentary habits and physical activity. Subsequently, they were followed up until 2015, in order to investigate who developed depression or psychological distress.

After the follow-up, it was observed that the women who spent more time watching television developed more symptoms of depression and distress. However, those who spent more time sitting doing activities with greater intellectual effort (reading or working with the computer) presented a lower number of depressive symptoms and psychological distress.

"We do not know what factors can explain why these results were not observed in men," the authors say.

Finally, the results -published in Depress Anxiety- suggest that physical activity, specifically walking, practicing sports or doing DIY, can counteract the negative effects of sedentary lifestyle on mental health.

Depression is the most frequent mental disorder in the elderly and the main cause of disability in the world. About 10% of people over 60 suffer from depression. This is an important health problem, not only because it greatly worsens the quality of life but also because it increases the risk of suffering from chronic diseases such as cardiovascular diseases, increases the use of health services, reduces adherence to medical treatments and increases the risk of death.

Psychological distress is a state of anguish or suffering that leads to a progressive loss of energy, emotional exhaustion and loss of interest in the things of life. As with depression, this condition is associated with an increased risk of chronic diseases and death.

Older people spend most of the day sitting, whether watching television, reading, using the computer, listening to music, etc. This sedentary lifestyle increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer and obesity, as well as being hospitalized or even dying. (Source: UAM)
