Voyager 2 could be leaving the solar system soon, says NASA

This diagram from NASA illustrates the hypotheses of the positions of Voyagers 1 and 2 in the solar system as of October 2018. Voyager 1 reached interstellar space in 2012. Voyager 2 could soon reach that milestone.

Do you want to escape? Do you want to go far, far away? Voyager 2 has defeated you: the spaceship, released in 1977, is approaching the edge of the solar system, according to a statement from NASA Published today (October 5).

The announcement is based on two different instruments on board, which at the end of August began to notice a small increase in the amount of cosmic rays, super-fast particles that hit the solar system from outer space and hit the spacecraft. That matches pretty well with what Voyager 1 He started experimenting about three months before his own great departure in 2012, but scientists can not be sure of the milestone until after it has passed.

"We are seeing a change in the environment around Voyager 2, there is no doubt about it," said Voyager project scientist. Ed Stone, a Caltech physicist, said in the statement. "We are going to learn a lot in the coming months, but we still do not know when we will reach the heliopause, but we have not arrived at that yet, that is something I can say with confidence".

The team behind Voyager 2 knows that the spacecraft is currently almost 11 billion kilometers (17.7 billion kilometers) from Earth. But it's hard to predict when the spacecraft will actually leave the solar system as it passes through what scientists call the heliopause.

The heliopause is the bubble. around our solar system Formed by the solar wind, the torrent of charged particles that constantly flow from our sun. But that solar wind rises and falls throughout the 11-year solar cycle, which means that the bubble in our solar system expands and contracts.

And because Voyager 2 is not exactly following the footsteps of its predecessor, scientists are not sure that its cosmic output causes identical changes in the data reported by the spacecraft. Therefore, until Voyager 2 passes through the heliopause, there is no way to be sure where exactly it is with respect to the heliopause.

Each time it manages to flee the solar system, Voyager 2 will become the second object created by man to do so.
