Vintage plane crash lands safely on the busy road
Highway 45 in Mississippi became a runway for a pilot on Friday afternoon when he left his vintage plane right on the road after he experienced difficulties with the engine. Miraculously, the pilot left completely unharmed and no one on the ground was injured.
The plane landed on the north side of the road at 3:15 p.m. local time. The plane had left the key field of Meridian Aviation and was heading towards Gulf Shores, Alabama, for a weekend getaway, the pilot said.
"Happy to be here, happy to be in one piece", pilot Boyd Williams said Meridian, Mississippi, affiliate of ABC WTOK. "Thanks to anyone on the way, he was injured, grateful that my two children came here and we shared another day together."

Williams was seen hugging her children in a video filmed by the local Facebook news group Clarke County Hot Topics.
"All we know is that the pilot had problems with the engine," Clarke County Sheriff Todd Kemp told the Clarke County Hot Topics. "He left Key Field recently, the fuel tanks were full, he had acquired some kind of problem with the engine while he was in the air and had to leave him here on the road, he was trying to get on the main road, but I think he had some difficulties and he had to lean on his shoulder and pulled the undercarriage from under the plane, he's very lucky that we have not had any other major incident here, I'm glad he was not hurt. Highway 45 was full of cars heading toward the beach on a Friday afternoon when Williams' Navion A single-engine airplane, built in 1946, lost power.
"I called to turn around and tell them that he was running roughly and seconds later he stopped completely," Williams said. "I was trying to purge the air speed to let them pass and I had to take the side of the road and prevent cars from entering."
Williams' daughter works for Meridian Aviation and heard the crackle of the radio with news that the plane had lost its engine. She and her other sister rushed to the crash site, fearing the worst.

"I heard them on the radio ... and I knew that my father left, I just said goodbye a few minutes before," Williams' daughter, Hannah, told WTOK. "I was crying, I felt sick to my stomach, but I was praying, we were all praying for him to be fine, when I arrived and discovered that he was fine, that was the best feeling in the world." He went from the worst feeling in the world to the best feeling in the world. "
Highway 45 was closed briefly and then a lane opened when authorities came and took the damaged plane (its landing gear started and the propeller tilted) on a platform truck.
