Defender Nate Schmidt and Vegas Golden Knights agreed to a six-year, $ 35.7 million contract extension on Wednesday that runs through the 2024-25 season.

Schmidt led the Western Conference champions in ice time last season at 22:14 per game. He had five goals, 31 assists and 19 penalty minutes in 76 games. He added three goals and four assists with a four-minute penalty in 20 playoff games for the Golden Knights expansion, which he lost to Washington Capitals in the Stanley Cup final.
In five seasons of the NHL, Schmidt has 13 goals, 66 assists and 64 penalty minutes in 276 career games. The Minnesota native was selected by Vegas from Washington during the 2017 expansion draft.
"He means a lot," said coach Gerard Gallant. "He's a top-level player for us, he did a great job playing defensively for us last year, obviously he got a good contract he deserves, and we miss him a lot, so he's a great player for our group and we're Happy to have it in the long term. "
Schmidt insisted that he did not intentionally take a banned substance and that he could not have obtained any performance benefit from the "trace amount" that entered his system.
He and the Golden Knights issued statements in disagreement with the sanction, although none specified the substance. Schmidt said one of the experts who testified on his behalf at the appeal hearing compared the amount with a pinch of salt in an Olympic-sized pool.
The appeal, which was heard by a neutral arbitrator, was denied.
