Vegan activist James Aspey shows wonderfully how to consciously inform people

  • The facts:

We live in a society that teaches competence at all levels, from school to adult life. But are we missing something? It is clear that a society based on cooperation instead of individual success and competence will help us.

  • Reflect on:

Why are we always taught to compete? Why is cooperation not taught in all aspects, since society like this is fostered among individuals at an early age?

There are two very important reasons why the myth of "competition leads to improvement" is to harm business, society and politics. Especially the politics of the right that continues to sell us the need for competition. Big business also makes it more attractive. However, reality shows us two great reasons why this misconception must end. Just to begin with, consider this: there are currently more and more regulations and laws that protect large companies than those that protect people. And in the USA UU Current, every day gets worse. In the great international economic treaties, the dangers are the same.

I think these big corporations are both suffocating competition (in their own sense of the word) and they are also repressing bottom-up collaborative growth and people's rights.

One might ask whether all "competition means progress" is either the fear of socialism or the more intelligent and elaborate "divide and conquer" mechanism that has been created. Because when large corporations collaborate in setting prices, they influence the law, flat-screen chains are established, why should not people collaborate more? Why do we think our governments do that for us? What would happen if we started a bottom-up collaboration?

Competition is not what makes most people run!

Several years ago, I and a friend, Jan Paul de Beer, invented Switchball, a sport that can not be won at "the cost of". It was beyond the tribal model of team sports. The purpose of the game is to make everyone shine as much as possible. So, while you can not win with the highest score and, therefore, run faster may not make an essential difference, people keep running, scoring, sweating and making great efforts to do what. The same with many children, they run for joy, pleasure, body development, play. My estimate is that only a minority of people really move when they can win. Most use win as an excuse because playful enjoyment seems frowned upon in our society. I think that is because the powers that be, those that benefit from the competitive organization of our society, love to sell us that as the core. I think that hurts the majority, who prefer to play in such a way that everyone can enjoy the game and feel part of it.

You win by optimizing the alignment and cooperation.

How do you compete? For cooperation. To win a race, the runner must align mind, muscles, breathing and intention. So the champions are optimizations of the internal cooperation. Teams that win championships often learn to put the team above personal interests. Hey, even your body is 2/3 of bacteria, they are all part of an ecosystem that collaborates to be you. Cells that do not die when it's their time, and that cling to life are actually called cancer. Also, how does competition really work for businesses? The majority of the work to stay in the game is about the quality of the alignment with each other within the organization and with the clients.

The nations are massive collaborators. Even corporations are predominantly large cooperation groups. They are strengthened by making agreements with suppliers, merchants, regulators, yes, sometimes even with competitors (illegal or not). On the other hand, we can see medical care as a very good example of why competition does not work to improve care. See how customers now also pay a large amount of money that is wasted on advertising and marketing. Corporations also reduce quality to optimize benefits for owners, often damaging their own assets and the services they should provide.

If you see your country as a collaborative whole, then curing "sick" parts becomes smart. Then, a very effective functional health system that addresses poverty and inequalities that diminish the optimal use of all potential within the population, becomes very intelligent and logical.

Natural systems versus competitive systems

On a small scale, or personal, predators can fight for food. On a large scale, each predator plays a role in a subtle but very complex system that really leaves room for everyone to do it. Lions do not win when they eat all the prey animals. They eat enough of the oldest and weakest, and actually benefit when the rest thrives for future meals. Real fights can make a difference in the level of individual survival, but at the greatest level, the destruction of shared conditions is dangerous for everyone. When there is very little grass, the rabbits die and without them, the foxes soon follow them. Nature recedes, when the grass returns, the rabbits grow in number and the surviving foxes find food again.

It is the same for humans, however, it seems that we keep fishing until the seas are empty, distribute lead, poisons and hormones in our environment so that nature recovers much more. We, humans, allow our corporations to fight for unlimited growth, like cancers. They try to circumvent the natural balance, avoiding losses. Unlike lions, human beings, and especially the capitalist profit system, begin to feed on healthy herds, as long as they can eat. It is not surprising that in the last decades more than 40% of all wildlife disappeared. So, what is healthier, fighting for infinite growth or collaboration to regain a healthy balance? Therefore, we must not compete against each other, but work to create the healthiest and most abundant environment possible!

"Competition is better" favors the wrong people and very few.

The second reason is that "competition is better" is a lie that makes good people thieves and thugs. While this may sound (and probably is) at the top, consider that most people want to help, support and work together, however, the school educates them to compete for better results. While getting a job is a competition, most jobs are not. Companies and societies are organized and successful as cooperative systems. Within organizations, people align to make a joint effort possible. However, we want people to consider themselves as competition and potential dangers. We train children to outdo others. That is pure division and political rule. We announce the richest as the best.

In fact, the only ones who really benefit from this belief are the real thieves and thugs in corporate and political life. They have created a climate in which we consider it correct that huge income differences make sense (no!), That creating unfair advantages is fine and selling dangerous / polluting / bad products is a good business when it enriches shareholders.

The conviction that "competition makes us better" as the central idea is not natural. We mistakenly hope that the laws balance real criminals. But laws can not balance injustice in the core. Nor can laws make a difference when the wrong people can buy laws in their favor.

Most people live honest lives helping neighbors, family and friends. They want and contribute to their community and society in a positive way. Meanwhile, schools and politicians tell them that striving to improve (at the expense of others) is the best way to achieve it. We train this in games, sports, schools, etc. We press employees to sell things to people who do not want it, they need it and they harm society in general because it contaminates. We believe that being better in that game is good. We reward the champions of this behavior. That gives us a false illusion. Most people who see the "winners" can dream of being among them, but actually prefer to stay where they are, because they feel that helping the people around them makes more sense.

We need to free ourselves towards friendship.

We should no longer be ashamed to want to be a positive contribution between us, instead of at the expense of). In the end, that gives the best and greatest reward of a vibrant network around you, that appreciates you for what you are. It's even better long-term sales, if what you sell really helps. The best companies are those that receive help from friends when they are in trouble, not those in which people start selling shares when they get lower results. The best companies are those where values are lived and where values include the environment, workers and society, where considering the financial reward is only one of the objectives, not the only one. In our hearts, most of us know it. It's time to talk loudly.

The main conviction "we are part of a larger system that we help with our role and position" sounds a lot better to me. Hell, most of us are living it. So stop thinking you're not strong enough to compete to the top. You can have higher values more natural than that. Avoid those that press their core values to increase sales. Consider yourself as a helper at all. It is the most lasting value proposition we have.
