Most parents are aware of the flu season and how to help protect their child from the disease, but many may not know about a different seasonal virus that can be so dangerous: respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).

Vanessa Lachey, actress and mother of three children, knows very well about the RSV: she affected her youngest daughter Phoenix in January 2018.

RSV can cause infections of the lungs and respiratory tract, depending on the Mayo Clinic. While it is said that the virus affects most children at the age of 2 years with mild symptoms that often mimic a common cold, in some cases, and especially in premature babies, it can cause serious infections.

Lachey's son was born prematurely at the 30th week of December 24, 2016. One year later, he contracted the RSV.

"His lungs were not fully developed like a full-term baby. His immune system was immature as opposed to a full-term baby. And so, when he contracted the virus, it affected him in a way that led him to be hospitalized, "Lachey told Fox News.

The RSV is late with up to 125,000 hospitalizations each year in the US. And, globally, the virus can cause 160,000 deaths per year, depending on the National Institutes of Health.

When Lachey first called his doctor about his son's ongoing fever, they told him it was probably the flu, since at that time it was a cold and flu season, and he was given a "TLC". But after a week, he knew that something was not right.

"His breathing started to be fast, his lips were turning blue, he had this look on his face," I was very lethargic, and there is a wheezing along with a cough, "Lachey said.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), symptoms of RSV infection include runny nose, decreased appetite, coughing, sneezing, fever and wheezing.

At that time, Lachey was traveling out of the country with the family for the 90th birthday of her husband's grandmother. Vanessa has been married to Nick Lachey for seven years. The couple has two other children: Brooklyn, 3, and Camden, 6.

"We were out of the country at that time because they told us it was just a common cold, the flu. And I said to my husband: 'This is not right'. Everything and my mom's bones are tingling, "said Lachey.

The family rushed back to the United States and, as soon as they reached the land, Phoenix was taken to a medical center.

"He was taken in an ambulance to the hospital and his oxygen level was in the 70's, which is very low."

The average oxygen level varies from 90 to 100 percent, somewhat lower and oxygen administered is recommended.

At the hospital, Phoenix was connected to a breathing machine and was diagnosed with RSV through a nasal swab. He had to stay in the hospital to be watched closely for six days.

Although premature babies are twice as likely to be admitted to the hospital for RSV as full-term infants, children with congenital heart disease (CHD) and bronchopulmonary dysplasia, a chronic lung disease, also have a high risk of developing severe symptoms related to RSV.

After Lachey's traumatic experience, she is now passionate about telling parents how they can be preventative at this stage in their baby's life.

"I want everyone to know about the RSV," said Lachey. "Ask the questions and if [doctors] Say no and you know something is wrong, then you just have to keep pushing. Honestly, I'd like to push a little more. I wish I could be educated a little more. "

Lachey said parents should continue to make sure their children wash their hands well during the RSV season. You can try to sing ABC to make sure they are washing long enough, he said. He also recommended cleaning the toys as often as possible and changing their children's clothes as soon as they get home from school or daycare, since germs can live on clothes for several hours. It is also important to wash your children's clothes and put them in the dryer in medium to high heat to make sure you kill any viruses that may be in them.

"Look, this is baby number three for me, so I understand it, I get people like" listen, I do not have the time "you need to buy time." Like a mother who sat in the hospital with her little baby connected to breathing machines, you need to spend some time between November and March and be educated, "said Lachey.
