The European Space Agency and Airbus, the company that manufactures the vehicle that will explore Mars within the ExoMars Mission, have opted for the proposal of the University of Valladolid (UVa) (Spain) to carry out the first tests of the vehicle and an important part of its instruments compared to those of six other countries.

Specifically, he has been the professor of Cristalography and Mineralogy of the UVa Fernando Rull who proposed the desert of Tabernas, where for the past fifteen days these trials have been taking place. In addition to testing the vehicle, called Rover, the Raman developed by the team of scientists from the associated unit CSIC-UVa is also being tested at the Astrobiology Center.

ESA's Exomars mission is a two-stage mission. The first was launched in 2016 and carries an orbiter whose main task, in addition to studying the surface through images, is to try to detect traces of methane emissions and establish if their origin is organic or inorganic. It also has a descent and landing system that will allow testing European technology to place the rover in good condition on the surface of Mars. This technological part directly affects the participants in the Exomars 2018 mission since the success of this trial is a guarantee that the rover equipped with the instruments can function in that mission.

Exomars 2018 has as its fundamental objective to analyze possible traces of organic activity related to past or present life on Mars through the study of samples obtained from below the Martian surface (up to two meters) by means of a driller. This methodology of analysis has never been tested on Mars and will be the first time that you can access materials below the surface.

The obtained samples pass inside the rover to the analytical laboratory in the form of crystalline powder. This laboratory is in ultra-clean conditions to avoid any terrestrial contamination that can induce a false positive. And in that analytical laboratory there are three instruments in charge of dust analysis: MOMA, a detector of organics led by Germany; MicrOmega, an infrared spectrometer led by France, and Raman, the spectrometer led by Spain developed by the Rull group.

One of the most important activities sponsored by ESA in order to explore the analytical potential of the instruments is the realization of joint tests in real conditions or very similar to those of the operation on Mars. To this end, the UVa laboratory has developed a simulator where the powder processing and analysis are carried out in conditions similar to those of the actual operation. (Source: UVA / DICYT)
