The Midwestern United States, or "Middle America," may not be the first place we would think of when we think of UFO sightings and strange aerial activities. There are a lot of sightings in sunny California, for example, and the same amount in the famous states of New York and Florida. However, UFO sightings in states such as Nebraska, Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, Kansas and Missouri are equally high, if not more so. And what's more, in some cases, these sightings go back to before the beginning of the 20th century. However, they do not always receive the general attention they deserve.

For example, we have previously examined another of those Midwestern states, Illinois, and the plethora of sightings and activity. what has happened and continues to happen there every year. While places like Chicago often receive a higher turnover when these sightings are made, this aerial activity is repeated in all the states of the Midwest of the United States.

However, we will begin with an incident perhaps on a par with the alleged Roswell accident. Except that this happened in 1884, near the little-known town of Max, just outside of Dundy County, Nebraska.

The Nebraska Accident of 1884

In the 6thth In June 1884, John W. Ellis, along with several contracted hands (cowboys) were gathering cattle on the open plains near Dundy County, Nebraska. It came at the end of the day, and the last light was about to be swallowed by the approaching night. Suddenly, an object, shining brightly, he crossed the heavens above them. With it came a "terrible buzz" sound. Each of the men stopped what he was doing and followed the object, watching it fall to the ground somewhere in the distance.

According to a later report in "The Daily Nebraskan," men would approach this paralyzed ship. This would cause one of them, Alf Williamson, to suffer severe burns for which he was taken to Ellis's house to receive medical attention.

The 'Nebraska State Journal' would also report on the incident three years later, in 1887. They claimed that when men managed to examine the object more closely, they had the appearance of some kind of "nuts and bolts". The presence of what "looked like a propeller screw blade" made of "brass-looking metal" would be reported. The report would also explain how the piece of the recovered boat weighed "no more than five pounds, but it looked as strong and compact as any known metal." Another section recovered from the object had the same "remarkable lightness".

Despite recordings of the account in the newspaper, some skeptics, including many from Nebrask, insist that the incident was "a hoax" of some kind. According to other records, on 10th June, after a huge and unusual rainstorm, the wreckage of the ship simply "melted". Some UFO researchers have suggested that this "unusual storm" was perhaps a kind of cover to recover his paralyzed vehicle.

Landing on the riverbank, Iowa, 1920

Although we will return to Nebraska and some of its more contemporary sightings soon, another pre-Roswell sighting took place in the vicinity of Iowa, on the morning of 3rd June 1920. Shortly after 10 am, Clark Linch was at his father's farm, about six miles from Mount Pleasant.

According to Linch, he was fishing when a strange egg-shaped object appeared out of nowhere from above and landed silently on the riverbank. The object was about fifteen feet away from him and he simply remained motionless.

Linch would remember that it was about fifteen minutes later when he started thinking about walking towards the ship. Just when he did, however, he burst into life. Although he was still completely silent, he quickly rose into the air, eventually disappearing out of sight. When Linch walked to the place where the strange oval object had landed, there was a clear impression on the grass. However, there were no burns or burn marks.

Although Linch would not talk about the meeting for another three and a half decades, when he did, the details were intriguing. I would claim that the object had a "blue and translucent" color. So much that "it would have been camouflaged in the sky". This is an interesting observation and certainly makes one wonder how often these objects move around the heavens that are above us today. He would also estimate that, although he moved with precision, his speed was only five miles per hour. Ultimately, he would come to the conclusion that "it was nothing on Earth."

The sighting of Diamond Island, Illinois, 1888

More than thirty years earlier, in September 1888 on the Illinois River in a destination with much mystery to its name, Isla Diamante, another seemingly cosmic encounter unfolding.. Rumors had swirled for years from a seemingly ghostly presence on the island. This particular night, a group of local residents, intrigued and attentive and reaching the bottom of this mysterious appearance, sailed to the island in their small rowboat. The most persistent rumors were of a strange "fireball" that would appear at the foot of the island. Usually late at night, around midnight.

They made their small boat stop on the island shortly after leaving. After securing it on the coast, they set foot on Diamond Island and began to position themselves in several discrete locations on the coast. Then, they waited. His wait, however, would not be long.

Suddenly, a bright red object projects its considerable light over the whole island from above. It had left the previously calm waters and then floated at a height of about forty meters. All the men were amazed as they watched the red object vanish and disappear. They went to their boat looking to embark and went home. However, it was not there anymore. In fact, it was adrift in the water at a considerable distance. It seemed that the red object was inside the boat. Then, the men witnessed the red object "take the form of a man". They could even see the movement of the figure paddling. Then, the figure turned once more to a red orb, before getting up and finally disappearing.

An awakened fisherman would rescue the small group. The sightings of the mysterious red "ghost" continue today.

More occupant sightings!

More than half a century later. Illinois was the host of another strange UFO encounter. This time, in Prospect Heights, in May 1952, just before 11 pm, Ann Sohn simply looked out the window. In front of her was a "disk-shaped luminous object". It simply hovered over a vacant lot of land. Ann could see that there was a "row of square windows", while in the upper half of the objects there was a "transparent dome". The main exterior of the boat was made of a "luminous white" material. Emerging from the bottom was a mist of "bright green vapor".

When he returned to focus on the windows, he noticed that they were all black. Except, that is, for three consecutive. To his surprise, in each of these illuminated windows there was "a man". Two of them were looking towards Ann, while the other was on his side. They seemed to wear "parka overalls" and some kind of headdress. The two parties looked at each other for about five minutes. Then Ann saw that the occupants were manipulating what appeared to be levers. In response, the ship suddenly acquired a deep red glow. Then, it vanished at a dizzying speed.

Several months later in the first hours of the 25th.th August 1952 in Pittsburg, Kansas, a similar encounter occurred. Staff member of KOAM Radio, William Squyres witnessed a low-rise object. near a wooded area of Kansas, around 5:30 am while driving from home to work. The more I looked at this object similar to a floating disk, I could distinguish "windows" along its edge. They had a blue glow for them. However, they appeared somewhat shaded. Squyres could see "figures behind him." After several moments, a "throbbing" sound was physically palpable in the air. Then, the strange ship rose quickly and disappeared.

Circles of "Solid light"

Another strange incident occurred sometime in 1954 in Osceola, Iowa; a young man, Michael Kelly, was talking about a strange memory of waking up in a field surrounded by "boy scouts". He could not remember why he was there, or how he had got there. However, he recognized the area and realized that it was close to home. Michael noticed that the scouts had some sort of uniform, although none wore their trademark hats. When he asked loudly where their hats were, one of them simply replied that "they were not wearing hats."

Suddenly, he found himself in a "circle of radiant light" that had a "solid" feeling. This is a particularly interesting description that often appears in other accounts. When he turned his attention upward, he could see a large round object above them with multiple lights of different colors around its edge. Once again, he asked aloud, what was the object. The answer was that it was a "helicopter". Michael would respond that he did not believe them. That it did not look like a helicopter. Then his mind went blank. He has no other memory of the incident, nor exactly when it happened.

Other Encounter that implies an apparent emission of light. took place in Merom, Indiana on the afternoon of 6th November 1957. That night, René Gilham would notice a strange light in the sky from his farm. When he went out to investigate, he could see that the light was a "bright and luminous object", about forty feet wide and at a distance of about 1,000 feet from the ground. While observing this strange and mysterious glowing object, he noticed that something "shone" from below and that "he bathed his farm with a mysterious and penetrating light".

What happened to René Gilham?

Gilham remained motionless observing the object for ten minutes. At one point, a smaller ship appeared and floated next to the much larger object. Then, the larger object suddenly "went up and headed west." At the same time, the light increased in intensity. And there was a "buzzing noise like a high speed electric motor winning revolutions". The sighting was also witnessed, in part, by Gilham's wife, her children and her father-in-law.

The next day, however, the owner of the farm began to experience intense itching on his face. It also became increasingly red, as if severely burned by the sun. The pain would eventually become so intense that he would seek medical attention. Research suggests that the rash was not a response to something like poison ivy or an allergic reaction. According to Dr. Joseph Drake, the redness was "similar to burns that are inflicted on the face and eyes when working near an arc welder without a mask."

The condition would continue to worsen, and he was finally admitted to the Mary Sherman Hospital. For these dates, the rumors circulated promptly. And reporters would hang around the hospital reception, eager to talk to staff or family members about Gilham's condition.

Perhaps strange, the case would suddenly disappear from public view. As would Gilham himself. Nothing remains in the registry after the declaration of 11th November that his condition had improved. And that he was going to leave the hospital the next day. Where it was, or if it even left the facilities, is curiously open for debate.

The sightings remain consistent

Returning to Nebraska, and in more contemporary times, UFO activity has always been consistent. For example, on the night that (then) the governor of California, Ronald Reagan gave his acceptance speech as a candidate for the Republican party for the 1980 US elections, 17th In July 1980, at North Platte, two anonymous witnesses saw "several objects in the form of rock" flying purposefully across the sky. The two witnesses were at a party on the ice rink when they looked up a little after 10 pm. After about ten seconds, they "vanished into a swollen white cloud". Interestingly, the following year the 19.th October 1981, in the same place, three objects were tracked by a radar that moved across the sky. Discs of various colors were also reported by five separate witnesses.

In sutherland on the 15thth November 1983, as he approached a group of young people who were obviously trying to hide the beer they were drinking, a police officer and the group themselves witnessed a "dark metal ship" moving across the sky to a height of approximately 2,000 feet. The witnesses reported that the strange ship had what appeared to be rows of windows in the middle. While the group watched the events unfold in amazement, three circles suddenly "shined a bright white light" and the mysterious object quickly moved away into the night sky.

Even more recently on the 22ndNorth Dakota July 2000, in Ogallala, three friends witnessed a huge ship with equally large panels that made up its exterior. These panels reflected colors and shapes "unlike everything they had seen". On 29th In June 2007, an anonymous truck driver would report three bright lights, in a triangular formation. They moved through the sky as he walked towards his truck shortly before midnight. After several minutes it disappeared vertically in an instant.
