SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea and South Korea held their first tripartite talks with the United Nations Command (UNC) on Tuesday to discuss ways to demilitarize the border while neighbors press for peace, the Ministry of Defense said. Seoul

The two sides agreed this week to start reconnecting rail and road links, despite US concerns that a rapid thaw in relations could undermine efforts to pressure North Korea to abandon its nuclear weapons. 

Tuesday's meeting followed its agreement at a summit in Pyongyang last month to hold talks with the UNC, which overlaps with US forces in the South and oversees affairs in the DMZ, to pave the way for disarm one of the most powerful in the world. Fortified borders.  

The meeting lasted approximately two hours in the border village of Panmunjom, and was led by military officers of the rank of colonel on each side, including Burke Hamilton, secretary of the Military Armistice Commission of the UNC, the ministry said. 

"They discussed practical issues related to the demilitarization steps that will be carried out in the future," he said in a statement after the talks. 

The steps ranged from removing firearms and guard posts to reducing personnel and adjusting the surveillance team, the ministry said, adding that the three-way channel will be used for future discussions. 

North Korea and the rich and democratic South are technically still at war because the 1950-53 Korean War ended in a truce, rather than a peace treaty. 

As an initial step towards last month's pact, the neighbors are looking to remove 11 guard posts within a radius of 1 km (0.6 miles) from the Military Demarcation Line by the end of the year. 

They began demining in several small areas this month and will build roads for a pilot project scheduled for April to excavate the remains of missing Korean War soldiers. 

Both parties will also withdraw all firearms from the Joint Security Area (JSA) in Panmunjom, reduce the number of personnel stationed there to 35, in line with the armistice agreement, and share information on the surveillance team.  

Tourists will have free access to the JSA.  

The measures, intended to be adopted within a month, would transform the border into a "place of peace and reconciliation," the ministry said.  

"Most of the operations will be carried out by the two Koreas, but ensuring that the support of the UNC is important, since it has elements of the United States and also manages the Military Armistice Commission," said a South Korean military source on condition of anonymity.
