ISTANBUL (Reuters) - Five Turkish employees of the Saudi Arabian consulate in Istanbul are making statements as witnesses in an investigation into the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, the Turkish television network NTV said on Monday.

Twenty consulate workers, including the consul's driver, gave statements to prosecutors in connection with the incident last week, NTV reported earlier. Prosecutors are seeking statements from a total of 45 employees, CNN Turk said.

Khashoggi disappeared on October 2 when he entered the consulate in Istanbul to obtain documents for his next marriage. After weeks of denying knowledge of their fate, Saudi officials said the prominent journalist was killed in a "dishonest operation".

The comments of Saudi Arabia's Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir on Sunday were some of the most direct in Riyadh, which have given multiple and contradictory accounts of Khashoggi's murder on October 2, first denying his death and then They admitted him in the middle of an international protest.

Jubeir said Khashoggi's assassination was a "big and grave mistake," but he tried to protect his powerful crown prince from the growing crisis, and said that Mohammed bin Salman was not aware.

After two weeks denying any involvement in the disappearance of the 59-year-old woman, Saudi Arabia said on Saturday that Khashoggi, a critic of the Crown Prince, died during a fight in the building. An hour later, another Saudi official attributed the death to a strangulation.

"Nothing can justify this murder and we condemn it in the strongest terms possible," said Germany, Britain and France in their joint statement.

In a speech on Sunday, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan seemed to suggest that he was preparing to disseminate information about the Turkish investigation, and he would do so in his weekly address on Tuesday to members of his ruling AK Party.

Erdogan has remained largely silent on the case, although Turkish pro-government newspapers have published information about the events at the consulate. Turkish sources say authorities have an audio recording that allegedly documents Khashoggi's murder inside the consulate.
