The death of a 61-year-old American tourist on the islands of Turks and Caicos is being investigated as a murder, local authorities told ABC News.



Marie Kuhnla was found on Tuesday morning in the bushes near a resort near Leeward, a popular beach area located in the western region of the archipelago, wrote the police force of the Turks and Caicos Islands on Facebook. She was pronounced dead less than an hour after being found, police said.

"Ms. Kuhnla's family is being supported by officers from the Royal Turkish and Caicos Islands Police," the officials said in a statement.



Kuhnla's son, Rick Kuhnla Jr., published a statement about the death of his mother, and described her as "a loving, affectionate and compassionate woman that I was lucky to have as a mother."



"While I understand that the focus of this story is on the circumstances surrounding my mother's death, I would like to take a moment to focus on her life," the statement said. "If I saw someone who needed help, I would help ..." My mother visited her elderly mother frequently, took her to lunch and accompanied her. She returned to school later in life to obtain her law degree and spent more than 15 years as a public defender, providing legal assistance to those who could not afford it. "



"She was a wonderful woman who brightened up the day to everyone who knew her and many who did not, she's gone, but the impact she had on the world and the inspiration she provided certainly is not," Kuhnla Jr said in the statement. .

Kuhnla was staying at Club Med, confirmed the resort to ABC News in a statement.



"The entire Club Med family is saddened by the death of this guest and sends his deepest condolences to the friends and family of the guest," the statement said.



The US State Department said it is aware of reports of the death of women on the island, the department said in a statement. The state department offered its condolences to the family and friends of the woman, but did not comment further on the investigation "out of respect for the family during this difficult time."



"We are providing all appropriate assistance to the family," the statement said.
