Trump scolded for praising the Republican who hit the reporter
A Republican senator says the United States needs a president who "celebrates the First Amendment," not one who "pretends that hitting a journalist is fine."
Ben Sasse (sas) of Nebraska has frequently criticized the president Donald Trump for what he considers Trump's uncivil rhetoric. Sasse has said that he "regularly" considers leaving his party and becoming independent.
Last week in Montana, Trump praised a congressman who, as a candidate last year, hit a reporter. Trump called Greg Gianforte (jee-an-FOR'-tay) a "hard cookie" and "my kind of man". Gianforte pleaded guilty to minor assault.
Sasse says that many consider Trump's crude rhetoric "playful" and "tune the most."
But Sasse tells CNN's "State of the Union" that any president should be an administrator of a free press and not joke about an assault.
