One-month negotiations on a possible presidential interview have been developed through several different iterations of Trump's legal team. Current principal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, told ABC News in August that his team had sent a response to Mueller requesting to limit the scope of an interview with Trump, especially in regard to obstruction of justice.
The president has said many times that he would be willing to talk to Mueller, but that he would wait for guidance from his legal team.

"Well, I really get along with Rod," Trump said.
Trump said he is "surprised" that the attorney general does not show up at the Capitol to testify under oath after some members of Congress asked him to do so.
"Frankly, if you were under oath or not, it should not matter," Trump said. "He mentioned things to me that I would think would be fine if he declared when Congress convened."
On Monday, the president said he had no intention of firing Rosenstein before his departure together on board the Air Force One to Orlando.

"When Kanye came out very strong a few months ago, something happened, my polls increased by 25 percent," Trump said. "The polls skyrocketed, I think I can say that I honestly had never seen that before."
In kavanaugh
The president also briefly referred to the recent political consequences on his newly appointed Supreme Court Justice. Brett Kavanaugh - echoing their support for the confirmation of Kavanaugh and condemning the appeals among some Democrats for impeachment.
"How is he challenged? Is he like this incredible person who turned out to be such a false and horrible burden that they did and want to accuse him?" Trump said.
In a interview with the Washington Examiner, a conservative newspaper, Trump said that while any other Republican president had "abandoned" Kavanaugh as a Supreme Court nominee, "he did not even think about going the other way" during the Senate confirmation hearings.
Trump told the Examiner that "the easiest way" would have been to withdraw his nomination while the accusations were developed, but he never thought about doing it.

In the Fox & Friends interview, Trump also said that aid efforts for Hurricane Michael "will go fast."
On Wednesday, when Hurricane Michael rushed toward the Gulf Coast, President Trump headed to the northern corner of Pennsylvania for a rally and fundraiser for the Make America Great Again campaign.
"Our thoughts and prayers on behalf of the nation to all who are on the path of Hurricane Michael, especially in the Florida Panhandle, are hitting and hitting hard," said Trump when the rally began. "It's one of the biggest, one of the biggest we've seen."
