Trump calls Kavanaugh's accusations & # 039; scary time & # 039; for men falsely accused

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that accusations of sexual misconduct against his US Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh showed that "it is a very scary moment for young men in the United States," which now they can be considered guilty even of innocents.

Five days after an extraordinary hearing in the Senate observed by millions of people in which a professor at the university, Christine Blasey Ford, detailed her accusation of sexual assault against Kavanaugh, Trump seemed to raise the issue of false accusations against men.

The fight for the nomination of Kavanaugh to a job for life in the best court in the US. UU It has as a backdrop the #MeToo movement that combats sexual harassment and assault that has overthrown a succession of powerful men.

Under pressure from fellow moderate Republicans, Trump on Friday ordered an FBI investigation that lasted up to a week on the accusations against his candidate.

Trump told reporters on Tuesday he thought the conservative federal appeals court judge would get confirmation from the Senate once the FBI completes its investigation.

"All my life, I've heard that you're innocent until proven otherwise, but now you're guilty until proven otherwise," said Trump, leaving the White House before leaving. A visit to Philadelphia.

"Well, I say it's a very scary time for young people in the United States when you can be guilty of something you can not be guilty of," he added.

The nomination has become a politically explosive issue before the elections on November 6, when congressional control is at stake. Some Republicans fear that moving forward with confirmation could alienate women voters, while Democrats seek to capitalize.

"What's going on here has a lot more to do than even the appointment of a Supreme Court judge, it really does, you could be someone perfect in your whole life, and someone could accuse you of something, it does not necessarily have to be a woman." said Trump.

Ford testified last Thursday that Kavanaugh sexually assaulted her in 1982 when they were high school students in Maryland. Kavanaugh denied the accusation, as well as the accusations of two other women for sexual misconduct in the 1980s.

Senator Jeff Flake, a moderate Republican who could be instrumental in the confirmation vote, expressed new concerns about the judge's "supporter" tone at the Judiciary Committee hearing.

"I was very concerned about the tone of the comments ... The interaction with the members was sharp and partisan, and that worries me," said Flake.

"I tell myself: 'You have a little freedom for what happened.' But on the other hand, we can not have this on the court." We just can not, "said Flake, who retires as senator in January at an event in Washington organized by The Atlantic magazine.

Kavanaugh hit an angry and defiant tone in the audience. He called himself the victim of "a calculated and orchestrated political coup" by the Democrats, attacking the Democratic senators and frequently interrupting them.

Flake voted to approve Kavanaugh in the committee's vote on Friday that sent the nomination to the entire Senate, but only after he asked the FBI to investigate allegations of sexual misconduct. Trump subsequently ordered the investigation.

In comments on Sunday in "60 Minutes" from CBS, Flake said Kavanaugh's nomination would end if the FBI investigation discovered that the candidate had lied in his testimony in the Senate.

"I do not think you should lie to Congress," Trump said Tuesday. "There have been many people during the last year who have lied to Congress, and for me that would not be acceptable."

Narrow margin

Republicans control the Senate by a margin of 51-49. That means that if all Democrats vote against Kavanaugh, Trump could not allow more than one Republican to oppose his candidate, with Vice President Mike Pence casting a tie-breaker vote.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said each senator will receive a copy of the FBI's report on his investigation.

"But this is what we know ... one thing is for sure, the Senate will vote on Judge Kavanaugh here, on this floor, this week," McConnell told the camera.

Senator Dianne Feinstein, the chief Democrat of the Judiciary Committee, said a vote on Friday on Kavanaugh would not give senators enough time to evaluate the FBI investigation.

Flake said the FBI had completed interviews with four people. A lawyer for Mark Judge, Kavanaugh's friend, said the FBI ended his interview with him. Ford identified the judge as a witness to the alleged assault. The judge has previously denied any recollection of such incident.

A person familiar with the matter said the FBI interrogated Deborah Ramirez, who said Kavanaugh was exposed to her at a party when they were both students at Yale University. On Sunday, she was questioned for more than two hours and handed over to the FBI a list of more than 20 potential witnesses, the person said.

The FBI will also interrogate Leland Keyser and P.J. Smyth, two people that Ford said were at the teenage meeting where Kavanaugh allegedly assaulted her. Julie Swetnick, a third woman who accused the judge of sexual misconduct in the 1980s, was not on the initial list of witnesses to be interviewed.
