Training equipment sent to centers in the midst of deadly viral outbreaks.

New Jersey Health Authorities said on Monday they would send infection control teams to four long-term pediatric centers and a hospital to help them train in the midst of viral and bacterial outbreaks that left 10 dead.

The teams will evaluate infection prevention practices and will be implemented as of November, according to Health Commissioner Dr. Shereef Elnahal.

The response comes amidst a fatal adenovirus outbreak at the Wanaque Nursing and Rehabilitation Center that left 9 dead, most of whom were under 18 years old. In addition, a premature baby died after the discovery of a bacterial infection at the University Hospital of Newark this month Officials have said.

"Outbreaks in facilities are not always preventable, but in response to what we have seen in Wanaque, we are taking aggressive measures to minimize the possibility that they may occur among the most vulnerable patients in New Jersey," Elnahal said in a statement. .

Those affected in the center of Wanaque have ages ranging from young children to young adults.

Adenovirus usually presents little risk to healthy people and generally causes mild symptoms of a cold or flu. Some strains also cause diarrhea and conjunctivitis.

The strain found in the outbreak in the rehabilitation center (type 7) is among the most potent types and sometimes causes more severe respiratory diseases, especially among people with weak immune systems.

The first symptoms appeared on September 26, and the state was notified of an outbreak on October 9, authorities said. The department said later Monday that there were 26 cases of confirmed adenoviruses in the center.

The agency said the most recent person fell ill on October 22 or earlier, which is still the last day a patient showed new symptoms.

The facility with 227 beds and for profit has a pediatric center and also deals with the elderly residents.

No new residents will be admitted for the duration of the outbreak, which will not be declared until the center can spend four weeks without new cases.

At the hospital, the state health department said earlier that it had found four cases of Acinetobacter baumannii since October 1. The baby had the bacteria and was transferred to another facility, where he died.

The department said that the exact cause of death is under investigation. There were aggravating medical conditions.

The bacteria can cause pneumonia or serious infections in the blood or wounds.

Those cases are not related to the virus in the Wanaque center, the Health Department said.

The story has been updated to show that the first name of the commissioner is Shereef, not Shereer, and the number of deaths in Wanaque is 9, not 10.
