Titanic storms

Titanic storms

Observed possible dust storms on Titan.

All those who saw at the time the already old but no less wonderful Cowboy Bebop possibly remember a chapter where the memories of Gren lead him to what he calls the war of Titan, an armed confrontation occurred on that moon of Saturn. Translating the aesthetic of a fight in one of the terrestrial deserts, an incredible scenario was achieved, although it certainly was an artistic resource, an artistic license if you will, to give a stage of drama to your past. There was no intention of being realistic. However, what in 1998 was pure fantasy, with time and the findings of the Cassini, have shown that that vision was something less fanciful than we could ever have dreamed.

And is that Titan It has huge fields of equatorial dunes. True, they are not made of grains of sand but of particles of hydrocarbons, but their resemblance to terrestrial ones, in spite of it, is evident. Already with her alone the image of Gren and Vicious fighting between the "sand" of the Titanic desert already acquired a curious verisimilitude. But they did it facing the hard onslaught of dust storms, as they sometimes did, the contenders of the 2nd World War in North Africa. Maybe that was asking too much of Titan. Or not, because new analyzes of the observations made by Cassini between 2009 and 2010, they have revealed that indeed there also seem to trigger large storms. The writers of Cowboy Bebop, without knowing it, they advanced many things of what was happening in that distant world, in that totally unknown moment.

Sebastien Rodriguez, astronomer at Paris Diderot University, and his team, analyzing the infrared images taken by Cassini in 2009, observed a series of bright spots, originally confused with clouds of methane, but which later proved to be something completely different:"From what we know about the formation of clouds on Titan, we can say that such methane clouds in this area and at this time of year are not physically possible. Convective clouds that can develop in this area and during this period of time would contain huge drops and should be at high altitude, much higher than the 10 kilometers that the model tells us that these formations are located"

To arrive at these conclusions, a series of models were applied that revealed that these characteristics were atmospheric and close to the surface. They also noticed that the bright spots were located directly above the dune fields around the equator, which are formed by small solid organic particles. This only left an explanation, which was that the spots were clouds of dust raised from them. Dust storms, to use a familiar definition.

The discovery is not entirely surprising. For years, scientists have known that this type of particle is formed by the interaction of sunlight with methane in the atmosphere. And when they grow enough, they rush to the surface. In addition, the presence of dunes in the region is indicative of strong winds and that the organic sands can be set in motion. However, this finding is intriguing, since it is the first time that storms are properly observed, which indicates that, also in this aspect (another one) can be similar to the Earth.

"We believe that Huygens, when it landed in January 2005, raised a small amount of organic dust upon arrival, "explains Rodriguez." But what we have seen here is on a much larger scale. The near-surface wind speeds required to lift such an amount of dust as we see in these storms would have to be very strong, approximately five times stronger than the average wind speeds estimated by Huygens measurements near the surface and by the climate models"

Titan It is a fascinating world, a place very similar and at the same time completely different from the Earth. A place where everything, despite its alien aspect, emanates a familiar air at the same time. Something that the producers of Cowboy Bebop when they filled it with sand dunes and dust storms. And that is how this incredible moon is, where anything is possible.

The bright areas in the equatorial zone of Titan, which are now considered possible dust storms.

The dunes of Titan lashed by dust storms. This is how this moon was represented in Cowboy Bebopp. Two aspects that, curiously, years later turned out to be something closer to reality than we could dream.
