In the past three years, Charter Spectrum eliminated 800,000 cable television subscribers, 5 percent of its base, but managed increase the income of the remaining customers by 6 percent through a chain of rate increases.

The latest increase will take effect next month, as cable service should increase the monthly charge by $ 2.50 per month for the typical subscriber, and more if you subscribe to Latino View or the company's Internet service, which will increase $ 5 per month. .

Cable TV offers "continue to be pressured by the high cost of content and by the fact that the content is packaged as it is," said Thomas Rutledge, CEO of Charter, during a conference call with analysts on Friday.

Plus: Charter will increase rates on Spectrum TV and internet services in November

In an early Friday morning earnings release, the Stamford, Connecticut-based company said operating profits of $ 11.9 billion during the first nine months of the year rose 5 percent, while revenue of $ 32.4 billion increased almost 5 percent.

In comments to analysts, Chief Financial Officer Christopher Winfrey said the latest round of increases in cable service rates was "around the edges" of the service. The impact on income and earnings of the movements, he said, will be evident in 2019.

Even with the popularity of its Internet service, subscription cable service remains Charter's main source of revenue.

Video customers have decreased from 16.9 million in the first quarter of 2016 to 16.1 million at the end of the third quarter in 2018. Although subscribers have been reduced, those subscribers' revenues have increased from $ 4.1 billion in the first quarter of 2016 to $ 4.3 billion At the end of September of this year.

The video is not the only weak point for Charter. The company has not been able to add traditional fixed telephony customers, with those flat line numbers since the beginning of 2016. But service revenues have declined drastically since the beginning of 2016.

Voice service generated $ 729 million in the first quarter of 2016, compared to $ 512 million at the end of the third quarter of this year, a decrease of almost 30 percent. Meanwhile, the number of customers has remained stable at around 10.2 million in the voice segment.

In the video and voice category, Charter feels intense pressure from the competition, industry analysts said.

"The entire pay-TV industry is going through a tremendous transformation," said Jeff Kagan, an industry analyst based in Atlanta.

Not only Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, Google and others are now in the landscape, he said. It predicts, within the next five to ten years, there will be a radical change within the industry as the new technology comes online. Kagan said there are no more agile competitors competing for your business, probably with lower rates than you are currently paying.

This may be good news for a horde of customers who are attracted to what they perceive as an endless stream of increases in cable television rates. Traditional operators are already seeing the impacts as more customers "cut the cable" and rely on the transmission services to supply their content.

"That means there will be a battle for the clients," Kagan said. "The market will require a different type of player."

Internet customers are growing for Charter: 14 percent in three years to 23.3 million. Internet service revenues increased 25 percent in the same period to $ 3.8 billion, almost closing the video gap.

While new declines are expected in at least the cable subscription numbers, if not the revenues, the Charter administration remains optimistic that a boost to higher internet speeds will win customers and push revenue from the segment beyond of the television service.

Management has high expectations that the company's new cell phone service will provide another source of revenue. Now, with fewer than 30,000 customers, Rutledge said he expects that side of the business to grow exponentially, as the company offers a robust product at competitive prices.
