Uveitis is the inflammation of the uvea - the ocular tissue located between the sclera and the retina - due to infections or autoimmune disorders. The uvea provides most of the blood supply to the retina, so the early treatment of inflammation could be key to avoid consequences in other ocular tissues, since, if not treated in time, this inflammatory process can extend to the vitreous and the retina. Researchers of the Institute of Biomedical Sciences of the CEU UCH (Spain) have tested for the first time in an experimental model the efficacy for the treatment of the uveitis of the drug Bevacizumab. Their results, which provide a new strategy for the treatment of uveitis and the prevention of its effects, have been published in the international scientific journal Frontiers in Pharmacology.
According to professor Francisco Bosch, director of the Institute of Biomedical Sciences of CEU UCH, "Bevacizumab is a drug used in combined immunotherapy for the treatment of tumors, which also has various ophthalmological applications to treat eye diseases such as diabetic retinopathy, edema macular or glaucoma ". The research team of CEU UCH, led by Dr. Bosch, has studied for the first time the anti-inflammatory capacity of the drug, against its potential risks in terms of toxicity, in uveitis induced in an experimental model.

According to Francisco Bosch, "the results of cellular and histopathological counts obtained by our team demonstrate the preventive capacity of the inflammation of this drug, not only of the uvea, but also of the retina and the vitreous chamber. And they also allow us to rule out the risk of retinal degradation that could be associated with the use of the drug. "
These results also provide relevant data in the controversy surrounding the use of injectable anti-growth factor drugs of the vascular endothelium, anti-VEGF. "Although bevacizumab, marketed as Avastin, was originally developed for the treatment of several types of cancer, it is commonly used in ophthalmology despite not being specifically recommended for it. Our results corroborate that in this area it is as effective and safe as other anti-VEGF drugs, such as Lucentis, which was designed specifically for ophthalmological purposes, but which has a higher cost ", highlights Dr. Bosch.
