These pairs of birds unleash their passion before others

The coroniazul blue (Uraeginthus cyanocephalus), originating in East Africa, are monogamous birds that sing and perform a peculiar tap-like dance with twigs when they are in pairs. This behavior, which consists in a mutual courtship between male and female, had not been studied in depth until now.

Now, a group of researchers has discovered that this exhibition of love intensifies - that is, they sang more songs and 'danced' - in the presence of third parties, mainly individuals of the opposite sex. This is the conclusion of the study published in the journal Science Advances.

To test how the presence of others influences the courtship, scientists from the Hokkaido University in Japan and the Max Planck Institute of Ornithology in Seewiesen (Germany) conducted an experiment with several pairs of these birds that live in flock. The experts exposed them to different situations with and without public.

The results showed that in an audience, male and female paired exhibited more songs and dances, especially when a member of the opposite sex was present.

However, these samples of 'love' were suppressed or moderated when the couple was alone without an audience. "It is a significant act in birds that live in a flock that they make a presentation of the most elaborate courtship towards their partner, probably to announce their relationship to others," explains Nao Ota, a researcher at the Japanese university and co-author of the work.

Researchers hypothesize that loyalty and attachment are necessary for long-term relationships between couples of this species.

"This could provide information on how complex communication signals have developed between animals, including humans, who also establish relationships," concludes Ota. (Source: SINC)
