Why be a journalist if you can not have fun? Our friends in the New York Post have been doing exactly that while publishing the refusal of New York Governor Andrew Cuomo and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand to debate their opponents in what is supposed to be an election year. There is also a lesson here about what happens in states with a single-party government.
The Post has the two Democrats dressed in yellow chicken suits with the headline, "Birds of a Feather" and "We're going to need a bigger cooperative!" Both politicians are planning presidential candidacies, but they are very advanced in the polls. They do not want to give their opponents the opportunity to highlight any of the highlights of their career.
The Republican candidate Marc Molinaro, without a doubt, would like to mention the corruption that has spread in the Cuomo clock, the terrible economy of the state and the decline of the underground trains of the city of New York. Republican Party candidate Chele Farley may ask Mrs. Gillibrand to defend her past admiration for Bill Clinton and Harvey Weinstein, even when she says she believes charges without evidence against Brett Kavanaugh.
Ms. Gillibrand announced on Friday that she was avoiding a debate with Ms. Farley scheduled for Sunday. The senator said she did not want to cross a "de facto picket line" of striking workers against
even when he said that "open public debate is essential for democracy". Are you getting a credibility advice from the Saudis? On Sunday night he finally agreed to a debate on Thursday at 1:30 in the afternoon.
The two Democrats can get rid of this disdain for democracy because New York is increasingly a single-party state in which Republicans can not win in the entire state. This is partly the result of a majority of the Republican Party in the state Senate that has not offered much of an alternative to the liberal government. But even that restriction in Albany is likely to disappear this year, as Democrats hope to control all branches of government. Politicians are no longer responsible when they do not face significant opposition.
