The White House says that companies are committed to creating more job training opportunities
WASHINGTON. The White House said on Wednesday it has promised companies to create more than 6 million job training opportunities, part of an initiative to address labor market changes and the shortage of skilled workers.
"Our strong economy has brought a long-standing critical issue to the forefront: employers are having trouble finding enough workers with the right skills," said Ivanka Trump, an adviser to President Trump and her daughter, during a conference call with reporters at which promoted benchmarks of a growing economy, including deregulation and tax cuts.
The White House did not say how many of the 6 million commitments represent new hires instead of job training opportunities for current employees, and it is not clear how far the effort goes beyond what companies would already be doing.
In July, Mr. Trump signed an executive order To create the National Council for the American Worker, a group of senior administration officials focused on developing a national strategy to train employees, as well as an advisory council. Initially, the president announced the commitments of the companies, including

hire or train more than 3.8 million people in the next five years.
Additional promises have been secured since then and will be highlighted at an event at the White House on Wednesday afternoon. The companies are in different stages of the initiatives.
The problems of labor force development have it has been a growing focus for business leaders in the United States.-And the Trump administration- as changes in the labor market have left big gaps in the skills. Almost one in five working Americans are employed in jobs that did not exist in 1980, many of them in technology, the fastest growing segment.

Most spending on education and training focuses on people under 25 and at school, does not reflect the need to continue with the updated skills, said Trump, referring to a report by the Council of Economic Advisers. But "while employers invest substantially in the training of workers with a university education, they only invest half of them in workers with a high school diploma," he added.
The White House meeting fits with a Tuesday workforce conference organized by the United States Chamber of Commerce, where President Tom Donohue spoke about a "two-gap challenge" about lack of skills and lack of workers.
"Our economy is rapidly changing because of technology, automation, globalization and other forces. "This transformation is generating opportunities, but it is also creating interruptions, and with it, insecurity for many companies and workers," he said in a speech. "Closing both gaps is imperative for our competitiveness."
Mr. Donohue described a series of steps, which include "common sense immigration policies" and address the problems that prevent veterans, former inmates and victims of the opioid epidemic from entering the workforce.
