Perhaps there is nothing more controversial in the world of cruises than the burden of gratuity.

It's a rate of up to $ 23 per person, per day, that many of the larger cruise lines, including Carnival, Princess and Norwegian, automatically add to passenger bills, and say they will be transferred to crew members in recognition of your service.

The charge applies regardless of whether a passenger feels that they have experienced good service, although in many lines they can be adjusted or eliminated while on board.

The practice of adding automatic tip charges to cruise ship invoices has emerged in recent decades, replacing a more informal system where cruise ships tipped waiters' stewards and service staff at their own discretion, in varying amounts.

Many of the lines that automatically add tip charges to bills say they do so as a convenience for passengers. It is much simpler for cruise ships to pay an automatic tip than to be a member of the crew that gives them a great service one by one, say the lines. Cruise lines also point out that the money is shared with behind-the-scene crew members who play an important role in the passenger experience, but who might otherwise be left unrewarded.

Critics of the charges say that the tip is a personal matter that should be left to the passengers. Some see the charges as a thinly veiled method for cruise lines to impose the responsibility of paying crew members to their customers. Until then, the cruise industry observer CruiseCritic has reported Some lines now pay employees of the cleaning and dining department on ships as little as $ 2 per day in base salaries, relying on the automatic tip to provide most of their compensation. According to CruiseCritic, up to 95 percent of the salaries of some cruise ship workers come from automatic tips.

The dollar amounts of automatic tip charges, sometimes called service charges, have increased in recent years at a much higher rate than inflation. In some lines, they are more than 25 percent in the last three years.

Still, the practice of adding a tip charge to invoices is at a crossroads in the industry. While mass-market ocean lines, such as Royal Caribbean and Norwegian, are increasing rates at an accelerated rate, an increasing number of more exclusive ocean lines, such as Azamara, Crystal, Seabourn, Regent and SeaDream, have eliminated them. The practice is also disappearing in some river lines. Uniworld, Tauck and Scenic Cruises are among those that now include gratuities for crew members at base rates.

Expedition-style "cruise-style" cruise operators have also begun to include tip charges in base rates. Just two years ago, Lindblad Expeditions, leader of the category, began to include tips in the fare of two of its ships, National Geographic Explorer and National Geographic Orion.

The listings below offer a look at the amounts that the main lines that serve Americans are currently charging passengers' bills in automatic tips. In addition to a flat rate per day for tips, some lines also add a tip of 15 to 18 percent to the bills of the boats. In some cases, the lines also add an additional tip charge to the bills in restaurants with additional charge on the boats and for spa services.
