(Reuters) - Akcea Therapeutics Inc. said on Friday that its treatment, developed in conjunction with Ionis Pharmaceuticals, which targets a rare genetic disease, was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration. UU 

The weekly injection of Akcea, Tegsedi, treats patients with hereditary ATTR amyloidosis with polyneuropathy. 

The polyneuropathy, a symptom of the disease, is the simultaneous malfunctioning of the peripheral nerves in the body, which produces tingling, numbness and renal dysfunction. 

Tegsedi belongs to a class of drugs that uses the RNA interference mechanism winning the Nobel Prize to manipulate ribonucleic acid, which interferes with or "silences" targeted genes and stops the formation of proteins that can cause disease. 

The approval of Tegsedi in the United States occurs almost three months after its approval in Europe. 

According to Akcea, based on the approval of Tegsedi by the US. UU., Ionis will receive a landmark payment of $ 50 million and both companies will divide the proceeds from the sale of the drug in a ratio of 60 to 40 in favor of Ionis.  

Earlier this year, the drug regulator had refused to approve Akcea's similar drug, Waylivra, which sought to treat a genetic disease that caused the accumulation of fat in the blood.
