The train cuts off crowd at the festival in India, at least 58 dead
A high-speed train passed over a crowd watching the fireworks during a religious festival in northern India on Friday night, killing at least 58 people and wounding dozens more, police said.
The train did not stop after the accident on the outskirts of Amritsar, a city in the state of Punjab, said the party's congressional politician, Pratap Singh Bajwa. Police Commissioner S. S. Srivastava said that 58 bodies had been recovered.
The Press Trust of India news agency said that two trains arrived from the opposite direction on separate tracks at the same time, giving few opportunities for people to escape. The victims were caused by one of the trains, officials said.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was extremely sad about the accident. "They have asked the officials to provide immediate assistance that is required," said Modi in Twitter.
One witness said that the train did not even sound when passing through the site, where hundreds of people watched the burning of an effigy of the demon Ravana during the Hindu festival of Dussehra. When the effigy was lit and the fireworks started, a section of the crowd began to retreat to the railroad tracks while watching the event.
"Why did the authorities allow the fireworks to show up so close to the train track?" He asked. He told the Republic television channel that he lost two brothers.
Another witness said that the victims did not realize that a train was coming because the fireworks were too noisy.
Navjot Kaur Siddhu, a politician from the local Congress party who was the main guest at the religious function, said that the celebrations are held in the area every year and that the railway authorities are alerted to operate the trains at low speed.
A lot of people live in the area with houses on both sides of the train track, he said.
However, after visiting the crash site, Manoj Sinha said the organizers did not alert the railway authorities about their plan to hold the event there.
Shatrughan Das, a wounded factory worker of 35 years, said he was sitting near the tracks watching the fireworks. "I did not see the train coming, I was unconscious, I saw the police taking me to a hospital while I regained consciousness."
"I'm feeling a severe headache and pain in my back and legs," Das said from his hospital bed, adding that his injuries were not serious.
After the accident, people rushed to the site, nearly 465 kilometers (290 miles) north of New Delhi, and shouted at the railroad officials for not taking precautions.
At least 50 injured were admitted to a government-run hospital, Pajes said, citing Rajesh Sharma, a magistrate.
While accidents are relatively common in India's extensive rail network, Friday was one of the deadliest in recent years. In 2016, 146 people died when a train slid off the railroad tracks in eastern India.
