LONDON (Reuters) - When television actor Rami Malek took on the role of colorful rocker Freddie Mercury in the movie "Bohemian Rhapsody," he discovered that the biggest challenge was to capture the dominant presence of Queen's singer on stage. 

Malek, the star of the Emmy-winning television drama "Mr. Robot, "portrays Mercury from his early years with Queen in the 1970s, through his rise to world fame with hymns like" We Will Rock You ", to a moving performance at the Live Aid charity concert in July. 1985 at the Wembley Stadium in London.  

Mercury was known for his character on the electric stage that connected with the audience.

"Every time Freddie was on stage, and in his normal civilian life, he did everything spontaneously," Malek said at the world premiere of the film in London on Tuesday. "Trying to capture spontaneity is an arduous task." 

Malek worked with a movement coach to convey Mercury's stage presence and also contributed to the soundtrack. 

The filmmakers used a combination of Mercury's real voice, Malek's voice and another singer against the band's original recordings to showcase the band's vast catalog of hits.  

The film also documents Mercury's personal battles, including his struggle with his sexuality and the use of drugs and alcohol. Mercury in 1991 was one of the first British celebrities to die of AIDS at 45 years old.

Brian May and Roger Taylor, members of the surviving Queen, backed the film. Both praised the performance of Malek and the actors who played them on the screen and showed how the band collaborated in their innovative sound.  

"We found a perfect Freddie with Rami Malek. It's sensational, "Taylor told reporters." We're very happy. We think it's a good movie. I hope it brings joy to many people. " 

Malek's performance has made him a major contender in the annual Hollywood awards season, which culminates with the Oscars on February 24. 

Variety said the 37-year-old Egyptian-born actor "takes on the role of Freddie Mercury as if he was born to him," while The Hollywood Reporter said he "takes on a daunting task, he more than offers it." 

"Bohemian Rhapsody" begins its global launch on Wednesday.
