CAIRO - On Wednesday, a group of international rights urged Egypt to reveal the whereabouts of a well-known human rights lawyer who disappeared after being arrested.
An Egyptian court ordered the release of Ezzat Ghoneim and another lawyer, Azzoz Mahgoub, on September 4, pending investigations, but since September 13, the two have not been seen or heard.
Egyptian police have "forcibly disappeared" Ghoneim, who was detained since March on charges of conspiracy against the government, Human Rights Watch said in a statement.
The New York-based watchdog quoted Ghoneim's wife, Rasha, as saying that the last time she saw her husband in custody at the al-Haram police station, south of Cairo, on September 13 .
Ghoneim's family and friends could not contact him, and the authorities refused to provide any information about his status or whereabouts, the rights group said.
"The forced disappearance of a lawyer at the request of a judge who explicitly authorizes his release reflects the contempt of the Egyptian security forces for the rule of law," said Michael Page, deputy director of Middle East and North Africa at Human Rights Watch. . "The Egyptian authorities must immediately reveal Ghoneim's whereabouts, release him and investigate and punish those who disappeared him."
Egypt's Interior Ministry did not respond to multiple requests for comments on Ghoneim's whereabouts.
Ghoneim heads the Coordination of Rights and Freedoms of Egypt, an independent group. Ahmed el-Attar, a spokesman for the group, said last month that the families of Ghoneim and Mahgoub tried to visit them, but were told that they had already been released. Amnesty International said at that time that the two had disappeared by force and were at great risk of being tortured.
Both Ghoneim and Mahgoub supported victims of alleged police torture, the disappeared and their families in Egypt.
The government has waged an unprecedented crackdown on dissent since the military overthrow of an elected but divisive Islamist president in 2013. Thousands have been arrested, many of them detained for months or years without charge.
Human Rights Watch, citing figures from independent rights activists for Egyptians, said authorities have disappeared at least 230 people since August 2017 and are increasingly attacking journalists and rights activists.
The most prominent case is that of Ibrahim Metwally, who was arrested at the Cairo airport en route to a US conference on forced disappearances in September 2017. The authorities only acknowledged his arrest days later, accusing him of spreading false news .
Metwally, whose own son disappeared in a protest in 2013, provided legal assistance to the family of Giulio Regeni, an Italian graduate student who was kidnapped and tortured to death in 2016. The authorities have denied any involvement in the kidnapping or death of Regeni, but activists say that it bore the hallmarks of police brutality.
