A collection of extremely rare ivory anatomical mannequins from the 17th century is found in The New York Academy of Medicine.
The curator of rare books and manuscripts of the Academy, Anne Garner, believes that there are about a hundred ivory mannequins in the world. No one seems to be sure what the models were used for, but Garner believes that the male doctors of the time could have collected them as state symbols. Most seem to be from the late seventeenth century.
All the mannequins, which the academy knows, are pregnant. Once lifted, the internal organs of the mannequins are visible. The fetuses can also be seen. The mannequins are delicately carved in ivory and are mysterious.
