The police repress the heroin houses in Barcelona, arrests 55
Spanish police arrested at least 55 people on Monday in Barcelona during a massive crackdown on squalid apartments used for migrant and drug trafficking in the northeastern region of Catalonia.
More than 700 investigative agents and 150 local police officers participated in the drug trafficking operation on Monday, the regional police of Mossos d'Esquadra said in a series of tweets.
An Associated Press photographer saw dozens of heavily armed police taking suspects out of a building and taking them to police vans. Police helicopters flew over Barcelona for most of the morning.
Police said the operation came after a two-year investigation into the rings that run the drug den apartments.
A Barcelona court authorized 40 searches in those apartments, also known as "narco flats", in the central districts of Raval and Gotic, according to the regional judicial administration.
With the increase in crime statistics in recent years, Barcelona residents have blamed increasing insecurity on the spread of illegally occupied flats used as distribution and drug consumption centers, mainly for heroin.
Catalan police said that before the crackdown on Monday, authorities had dismantled 100 apartments and arrested 139 people linked to drug trafficking in the last two years.
