Prior to becoming CEO of GoDaddy in January, Mr. Wagner held the position on an interim basis in 2012 for private equity owner KKR & Co. and helped recruit Yahoo's Blake Irving to take on the role of CEO. For four years as Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Wagner helped GoDaddy go public and diversify its web hosting services for small businesses. Together, Messrs. Wagner and Irving reviewed the company from a quirky Internet domain registrar known for its Super Bowl ads and one of the best places to work for women in technology. Here, four trusted advisors.
Julianne Wagner
Wife
Voted "most likely to be a CEO" by her classmates at Northwestern University business school, Ms. Wagner keeps her husband on earth and does not tend to sweeten his comments. "It's so uncomfortable for your spouse to basically get carried away by the embers," she says, "but she makes me feel better."
Daniel C. Urban
Chief of operations, lawyer of the law firm Wickens Herzer Panza.
When he met Mr. Urban in 1988 on the first day of soccer practice at Yale, Mr. Wagner was skeptical about his teammate's denim fashion sense. "He was wearing jeans, a denim shirt and a denim jacket ... and he had a mouse tail," he says. In the three decades since, Urban's friendship has proven to be more lasting than his style choices: they talk twice a month and keep a group text with other friends.
Sharon Cohen
Founder and CEO of Figure Skating in Harlem and GoDaddy client
To stay in tune with the more than 18 million customers of his company, Mr. Wagner aims to observe and interact with them personally, including Ms. Cohen, of the nonprofit figure skating organization in Harlem. "[M]"The best ideas, realizations, crystallization of what we have to do come from seeing that people not only work with our own software ... it comes from interacting with customers".
Doris Kearns Goodwin
Presidential biographer and author of "Team of Rivals".
Wagner likes to read works by Peggy Noonan and Malcolm Gladwell, but gravitates toward biographies because they inform his leadership style with a sense of history. His favorite is "Team of Rivals," Abraham Lincoln's biography of Goodwin, because it puts the business dilemmas he now faces as CEO in perspective.
