The pirate of the southern skies

This vivid image of an active star formation region - NGC 2467, sometimes called the skull and crossbones nebula - is as dark as it is beautiful. This image of dust, gas and bright young stars, gravitationally tied in the shape of a smiling skull, was captured with the FORS instrument of ESO's Very Large Telescope (VLT). While ESO telescopes are commonly used to collect scientific data, they can also capture images like these, which are beautiful in themselves.

It is easy to discover why nickname skull and crossbones. This bright and youthful formation clearly resembles a menacing hollowed face, of which only the great mouth is visible. NGC 2467 hides in the constellation of Puppis, which is translated in a delicate way as La Popa.

This nebulous collection of stellar clusters is the birthplace of many stars, where excess hydrogen gas created the raw material for stellar creation. This is not, in fact, a single nebula, and its constituent star clusters move at different speeds. It's just the chance alignment along the line of visibility from Earth that makes stars and gas form a humanoid face. This luminous image should not give any new information to astronomers, but it allows us all to take a look in the agitated austral skies, bright with wonders invisible to the human eye.

Puppis is one of the three constellations named with nautical names that sail through the southern skies, and that used to form the giant constellation Argo Navis, named for the ship of the mythical Jason and the Argonauts. Since then, Argo Navis has been divided into three: Carina (the keel), Vela (the sails) and Puppis, home of this nebula. Although Jason is a heroic figure, he is most famous for stealing the golden fleece, so NGC 2467 rests not only in the center of a huge celestial ship, but also among thieves, an appropriate abode for this piratesque nebula.

This image was created as part of ESO's Cosmic Jewels program, a dissemination initiative to produce images of interesting, intriguing or visually appealing objects using ESO telescopes, for educational and public dissemination purposes. This program takes advantage of telescope time that can not be used for scientific observations. All collected data may also be used for scientific purposes, and are available to astronomers in the ESO scientific file. (Source: ESO)
