BARCELONA (Reuters) - Montserrat Caballe, who brought the opera to the charts by singing "Barcelona" with Freddie Mercury three decades ago, died Saturday at age 85.
The Spanish soprano, born in the Catalan capital, had been ill for several years and was admitted to a hospital in mid-September, a hospital official said. He died in the Sant Pau hospital in Barcelona.

Spanish tenor José Carreras said he had a powerful voice, combined with an impeccable technique.
"Of all the sopranas I've heard live in the theater, I've never heard anyone sing like Caballe," Carreras said in an interview with Catalunya Radio.
The royal family of Spain called her "the great lady of the opera, a legend of universal culture, the best among the best".
"Your personality and your unique voice will always be with us," said royalty in a tweet.
Caballe released the song "Barcelona" with the leader of Queen, Mercury, in 1987, and was used again during the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, one year after Mercury's death.
"She went beyond opera and classical music, demonstrating that opera singers are not only limited to opera theaters but go much further," said Christina Sheppelmann, artistic director of Liceu, to journalists on Saturday. in Barcelona.
Recognized for her Italian opera performances, she also worked with the late tenor Luciano Pavarotti.
The Royal Opera House in London, where Caballe sang several times between 1972 and 1992, also expressed his condolences, saying that he had "inspired millions."

FUNERAL ON MONDAY
Among other reactions, the Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sanchez, tweeted: "Sad news, a great ambassador of our country dies, an internationally recognized soprano opera, his voice and his kindness will always remain with us."
A government source said Sánchez would attend Caballe's funeral, which will take place at the Les Corts morgue in Barcelona at noon on Monday.
Caballe was considered one of the best modern exponents of the "bel canto repertoire," Spain's Culture Minister José Guirao said on Saturday.
"His loss leaves a great void," he said.
Caballe's almost 60-year international career took her from Basel to New York and beyond.
He began in the Swiss city in 1956, as Mimi in La Bohème, then joined the Bremen Opera, where he sang from 1959 to 1962, in a wide variety of roles.
A wider international recognition came in 1965, when it appeared in a performance by Lucrezia Borgia de Donizetti at Carnegie Hall in New York.
The performance gained great recognition from the public and turned it into a sensation overnight.
Its success took to its debut that same year in the Metropolitan Opera, like Marguerite in the Faust of Gounod.
His last performance took place in the Catalan town of Cambrills in August 2014.
However, despite a brilliant and successful career, it was not without controversy.
