The oldest remains of a macroskeleton
The oldest known skeletal remains belonged to microorganisms that lived between 700 and 650 million years ago. An international research team has now found that larger organisms of the same period, including Palaeopascichnus linearis, up to 20 centimeters long, also had a skeleton.
What remains of the Palaeopascichnus has an aspect that resembles that of a series of spheres or ellipsoids in single file. Structures of this type have been known for a long time and can be found all over the world since during that period of time they were one of the most widespread living organisms. The structure now identified as the Palaeopascichnus was considered for a long time as a fossil trail of biological activity: a description cataloged them as traces on a surface of a substratum or sediment left by the migration of animals in search of food, another as fecal rivulets petrified, and another as remains of algae.
The international team of Anton Kolesnikov, of the Institute of Geology and Geophysics of Petroleum in Russia, has been able to demonstrate for the first time that the Palaeopascichnus was really a skeletal organism. Scientists have also found that it has much in common with modern giant protozoa.

Paleontologically speaking, the Palaeopascichnus had more luck than other creatures of those times, such as those that made up the biota of the Ediacarian period, which almost disappeared approximately 10 million years before the Cambrian. The Palaeopascichnus continued to live until the early Cambrian, and in theory the modern xenofióforos could be their distant descendants.
