The oldest intact shipwreck in the world discovered in the Black Sea

In the world of ancient archeology, there are many things we only know about paintings or drawings on walls or ceramics. The old ships are a good example, since they were made of wood that decomposed and disintegrated, leaving nothing behind. It is even worse for wrecked ships, since water can accelerate that destruction. That is, unless the wooden boat sinks into a body of water whose bed is so devoid of oxygen (anoxic), decomposition can not occur. One of those places is the bottom of the Black Sea, and that rule proved as the explorers there recently found an intact shipwreck that had only been seen before in ancient Greek pottery and that dates back to 400 BC. Needless to say, archaeologists are celebrating.

"The condition of this shipwreck under the sediment is amazing, the structural wood looks like new. This suggests that there must be much older remains and, in fact, even in the few days after the immersion, we have discovered three considerably older remains, including one from the Hellenistic period and another that may be even older. "

The discovery was described in a declaration released this week by the Project of Maritime Archeology of the Black Sea (Motto: If you are not in the Black Sea, we are busy). During the three summer seasons, when they were able to explore the bottom (using a remote deep-water camera designed for offshore oil and gas exploration), the project found "60 amazingly well-preserved wrecks" from various periods of long history of the Black Sea, including the most recent Cossack ships of the seventeenth century.

"A small part of the vessel has been carbon dated and is confirmed as the oldest intact shipwreck known to mankind."

Found at a depth of more than 2,000 meters (6,500 feet) at the end of 2017, the images indicate that the ship was a commercial ship similar to the one painted on the famous 'Siren Vase' on display at the British Museum, showing Odysseus tied to the mast, so that he can hear the call of the sirens. While that event is a myth, this ship is real and its discovery is significant, says Professor Jon Adams from the University of Southampton, principal investigator of the project.

"This will change our understanding of shipbuilding and navigation in the ancient world."

We hope that one thing helps to solve is how the Greeks became the first to successfully pass what was then called the "inhospitable" sea until 475 BC, shortly before this design was developed.

Interestingly, or perhaps ironically, the ship was found while the researchers were looking for something else: how the Black Sea area was affected by the floods after the last Ice Age. Preparations for climate change perhaps?

Nothing lives on the bottom of the Black Sea ... except our history.
