A skull called Luzia, one of the oldest fossils found in America, was discovered amid rubble after a massive fire in the National Museum of Brazil on September 2.

Museum director Alexander Kellner told The Associated Press that Luzia, the fossil, had been broken and that 80 percent of her pieces had been found.

The fossil was found during an evacuation in 1975 outside the Brazilian city of Belo Horizonte. Luzia is considered one of the most prized possessions of the museum.

The fossil received the name of Luzia in homage to "Lucy", the famous remains of 3.2 million years found in Africa. The evidence suggested that the skull belonged to a woman who is believed to be about 20 years old, BBC informed

The BBC reported that the skull was placed in a metal box that helped it not to be damaged by fire. Other notable artifacts, such as the Bendegó meteorite, were able to survive the fire. The cause of the fire was under investigation.
