While Albuquerque has been named as NetflixThe newest production center, those in the industry say that the benefits are likely to reach all parts of New Mexico.

In fact, Santa Fe's New Mexico reported earlier this week that Netflix executives had already visited Santa Fe to find space for a project next year.

Eric Witt, who directs the Santa Fe Film Office, said he received two phone calls Monday from producers about an hour after Netflix announced plans to buy Albuquerque Studios and establish a production center in the city.

"They are everywhere: 'What is available in Santa Fe? What is available in Santa Fe?' "Witt said. "It's great."

The company is projected to deliver $ 1 billion in production expenses in New Mexico over the next decade and thousands of jobs, officials said.

Industry members described it as a first step towards a new booming era for the state's film and television business.

Netflix establishing a regular cycle of its episodic productions in Albuquerque could create a kind of chain reaction, others said, providing job opportunities for crewmembers across the state, which in turn increases the need for new workers and the capacity of the state for more productions.

"The series keeps people employed for a longer period of time," said Anton Walpole, a Santa Fe filmmaker who served as production manager for the unit in the Western drama Godless. "The new model has taken a large part of the crew's base and puts them in a very safe position."

The company could also mean more business at the Garson studios on the downtown Santa Fe campus, studies at Las Cruces and Albuquerque, or studies that have not yet been built. Industry experts have said for a long time that the movie epicenters of the state could use more space.

But there are challenges embedded within the opportunity. State Senator Jeff Steinborn, Democrat of Las Cruces, who is president of the nonprofit organization Film Las Cruces, said it is necessary to consider the so-called state incentive limit: an annual maximum of $ 50 million in reimbursements that the state can pay to qualify Film producers: now they would become a priority in the next legislative session.

With Netflix promising to spend $ 100 million a year on production, and the state paying at least 25 percent of production expenses through its rebate program, Netflix will consume approximately half of the $ 50 million maximum each year.

"It's a good problem because we have more business, but ... This puts the lid and center problem for us," Steinborn said. "It's a good time to consider raising him."
