The mysterious lost city of the Kalahari

Extending in approximately 350,000 of the African countries of Botswana, Namibia and South Africa, there is a vast expanse of sand desert, sandy savannas, known as the Kalahari desert. The word "Kalahari" comes from the local word Tswana Kgala, which means "the great thirst", or Kgalagadi, which means "a place without water", and the Kalahari Desert certainly looks good, with huge swaths of earth that look like something from an inhospitable alien planet, all twisted thickets, twisted dead trees and twisted rocks, and red sands that move without any source of water. This is for the most part a prohibitive lunar landscape of a place, and was for a long time a domain that could well have been in another world for outsiders, however, in 1885, one of the first Westerners to set foot inside these Badlands ventured into an unexplored area of the Kalahari desert and would set eyes on a great mystery that still remains unexplained.

The expedition was carried out by an American explorer and animator from New York by the name of William Leonard Hunt, who in his native land earned his living performing death defying tricks like the loose ropes over Niagara Falls, and exhibiting men Africans like Bush. a human zoo, and it was usually called Guillermo Farini or "El Gran Farini". In February 1885, he left Cape Town, South Africa, along with a contingent of fellow adventurers, some native guides and his son, Lulu. . The purpose of the trip was not particularly noble, they were not there to plot a new kingdom on the planet or catalog their new plants, animals and people, but they were there to enrich themselves by searching for diamonds, which Farini had. I heard that the region was overflowing. The adventurers penetrated a desert area never before seen by the outside world, and when they returned they did so with all the history to tell.

The Kalahari desert

Upon his return to civilization, Farini immediately compiled a report of his findings, which he presented to the Geographical Society of Berlin in 1885 and to the Royal Geographical Society of Great Britain in 1886, shortly thereafter followed by a book on what he had seen and experienced. in those scorched by the sun, titled Through the Kalahari desert. One of the main events of these reports and the book was the story of having found the ruins of a city that was once a great city half buried in the sands of blood reds, and which he estimates have been thousands of years. Farini wrote of this enigmatic lost city:

We camped at the foot of the mountain, near a rocky ridge, which looked like a Chinese wall after an earthquake, were the ruins of a huge structure, sometimes sanded. We carefully inspected the almost mile-long ruins, a pile of huge carved stones, and here and there, cement tracks were clearly visible between them ... In general, the wall was shaped like a semicircle, inside the which, approximately forty feet away, were piles of masonry in the form of an oval or a blunt wing. The height of a foot and a half ... As they were all sanded to a certain extent, we ordered all our people to excavate the largest of them (and this work clearly did not suit them) and we discovered that the sand had protected the union of destruction.

The excavations lasted almost all day, which caused a lot of indignation in January. He could not understand why it was necessary to dig up the old stones, for him this activity seemed a waste of time ... We started to dig sand in the middle of the semicircle and discovered the stirrup of the twentieth width, covered with large stones. The upper layer was composed of oblong stones placed at right angles to the lower layer. This bridge was crossed by another, forming as if it were a Maltese cross. Apparently, in the center of it was once an altar, a column or a monument, as evidenced by the preserved foundation: masonry in poor condition. My son tried to find some hieroglyphics or inscriptions, but found nothing. Then he took some photographs and sketches. May the people who know better than I judge them by when and by whom this city was built.

In general, the ancient city was described as quite extensive and immense, and Farini would speculate that a great catastrophe had erased his people, no matter who they were. Bearing in mind that it was never known that there was ever a great civilization that had inhabited that region, and that seemed to coincide with the stories that the Bushman of the area had told for a long time about the lost cities hidden in the sands, the bill It grew a lot. of interest at that time, and the charm of some ancient lost hidden in the remote Kalahari proved to be romantic and irresistible.

A sketch of the lost city.

Fueled by the reports, sketches and photographic evidence provided by Farini, there have been numerous follow-up expeditions to try to find the Lost City of the Kalahari, and to date around 30 expeditions of this type have been launched over the years. years, none that have managed to find something as spectacular as Farini described it, and some have become doubtful of the truth of history. One of these prominent expeditions was launched in 1964 by a professor named AJ Clement, who followed what he believed was Farini's original route and encountered a very strange rock formation in the desert that he believed was the same as Farini had found and could have been confused with something made by man, but concluded that it was simply an anomalous natural formation, probably caused by the erosion of a particular type of igneous rock called dolerite. In fact, Clement expressed his doubt that the region could have ever supported such a legendary city, and would say of the Lost City of Kalahari:

The climatological history of the Kalahari does not seem to have undergone any notable change for several thousand years, and it is obvious that there could not be a settlement of the size indicated by Farini without perennial rivers or lakes in the vicinity. And, the right conditions for the establishment of a city may not have existed along any of the river courses for tens of thousands of years. Furthermore, if the age of the Lost City is assessed in relation to Zimbabwe and the ancient ruins of Persia, it is impossible to conceive that any of the Kalahari was built more than 15,000 years ago.

Like all legends, that of the Lost City will take a long time to die, and no doubt there will be some who are not willing to let the matter rest in spite of all the evidence to the contrary. And possibly this is just as good, because there is something rather sad about the destruction of a legend.

Clement was right in the sense that there are many who have not let the legend die, and are still convinced that the legendary city really exists, with expeditions that continue to the present and use new technology to help them. A recent search was carried out in 2013 for a multi-source research project using Google Maps, called the Marcahuasi Project, which found anomalies in the desert that could be indicative of the walls of the lost city, but it is still unknown. images. an old city, more recent abandoned irrigation circles for crops formed by native tribes, or simply a natural formation.

Farini's expedition in the Kalahari.

Even more recently, it was still an expedition in 2016 for the Travel Channel series. Unknown destination, led by explorer and host Josh Gates and equipped with state-of-the-art technology such as aerial surveys and radars. They managed to find some unusual rock formations that resemble walls and ruins, but again it is unknown if they are artificial or if they really were what Farini wrote. One of the problems with the location of the Lost City is that the area is so remote and inhospitable, and this coupled with its large size makes it a formidable task to try to locate these supposed ancient ruins between the endless sands and the scrub of the desert . What does not help is that Farini did not give very detailed descriptions of the actual location, and this is compounded by the fact that the ruins are supposedly half buried. One of the members of one of the many expeditions that tried and failed to find the city once lamented:

Everything is very vague. When you see this desert, you will understand that you can walk among the sand dunes for months and not even go near the places where the lost city is located.

The Lost City of the Kalahari described by Farini has become a legendary, almost mythical place, in the same realm as places like Atlantis, and there have been many theories about its existence. Some think it is a real place, maybe a city that was once built and abandoned by its creators due to a great drought or even a prosperous lost civilization. Others, like Clemente, think that it is likely that only natural rock formations are mistakenly identified. Others point to the background of Farini's employer and say that the entire report, the sketches and even the photographs were probably falsified, that it was a great deception. Bearing in mind that Farini is the only one who has documented the city in an appreciable way, and the vast stretches of the hard terrain involved, if there really is a city out there, then it is quite possible that it will remain buried and hidden, as it has. for thousands of years and maybe for thousands more to come.
