The classic story about the ancient city of Koh Ker is one that defines it as a place briefly occupied and abruptly abandoned, but in fact the area seems to have been occupied for several centuries beyond what was traditionally recognized, according to a new study carried out by Tegan Hall of the University of Sydney in Australia, and his colleagues.

Koh Ker was part, for a time, of the Khmer Empire in what is today Cambodia. During just two decades in the tenth century of our era, the city served as the royal capital, and it has been long believed that after the transfer of the royal throne back to Angkor, the city and its surroundings were abandoned. In the new study, Hall and his colleagues examined this theory by analyzing remains of charcoal and pollen in sediment cores spanning several centuries at three Koh Ker locations, including the main central temple pit. Making deductions from these data, they reconstructed a long history of fluctuations in vegetation regimes and fires, which are very indicative of patterns of human occupation and land use over time.

The new portrait is of a region that was occupied long before the Angkor period, at least from the late seventh century AD, which continued for seven centuries or more after the royal throne came out. The authors suggest that the mobility of the royal houses had a smaller impact on the regional populations in the Khmer Empire than previously believed.
