The modified cotton could be a source of human food after the green light of EE. UU
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - US regulators UU They have paved the way for farmers to grow a genetically modified cotton plant to make cottonseed for people, a new potential source of protein-rich food that could be especially useful in cotton-producing countries affected by the desnutrition.

The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service of the US Department of Agriculture. UU On Tuesday, it lifted the regulatory ban on farmers cultivating the cotton plant, which was developed by scientists at Texas A & M University. The cotton seed of the plant can not be used as food for people or as animal feed still in the United States because it lacks the approval of the Food and Drug Administration.
Cotton is widely grown throughout the world, with its fiber used to manufacture textiles and cottonseed used among other things to feed animals such as cattle and sheep that have multiple stomach chambers. The common cotton seed is not suitable for humans and many animals to eat because it contains high levels of gossypol, a toxic chemical.
With the financial help of a group from the cotton industry, scientists led by biotech researcher at Texas A & M AgriLife's Keerti Rathore used the technology called RNAi, or RNA interference, to "silence" a gene, virtually eliminating the gossypol of the cottonseed. They left the gossypol at natural levels in the rest of the plant because it protects against insects and diseases.
"For me, personally, it tastes like chickpea and could easily be used to make a tasty hummus," Rathore said of cottonseed without gossypol.

After the cottonseed oil, which can be used for cooking, is removed, the remaining high-protein food from the new cotton plant can have many uses, Rathore said.
It can be turned into flour for use in breads, tortillas and other baked goods and in protein bars, while whole grains of cotton seeds, toasted and salted, can be consumed as a snack or to create a butter-like paste. peanuts, Rathore added.
If all the cotton seeds currently produced in the world are used for human nutrition, they could meet the daily protein requirements of approximately 575 million people, Rathore said.
Other countries would have to give regulatory approval for the cultivation of the new cotton plant, although the regulatory action of the United States is often taken into account.
The increased commercial use of the new cotton seed can be as food for birds, pigs and aquatic species grown as fish and shrimp, Rathore said.
Rathore added that many of the roughly 80 cotton producing countries in the world, especially in Asia and Africa, have populations facing malnutrition that could be addressed with the new plant.
