"I realized immediately that this was something special," he said of the 22-kilogram meteorite, described as the sixth largest recorded find in Michigan and with a potential value of $ 100,000.
"It is the most valuable specimen I have had in my life, monetarily and scientifically," he added.
David Mazurek says he took the top of the door to the university to examine it in January, after seeing reports of pieces of meteorites that sold for thousands of dollars.
Mazurek says the meteor came with a barn he bought in 1988 in Edmore. He says that the farmer who sold him the property told him that he landed in his backyard in the 1930s. When looking at the rock on the barn property, the previous owner told him in a practical way that it was "a meteorite" and that "He made a tremendous noise when he hit."
After the analysis, it was determined that the space rock contained 88 percent iron and 12 percent nickel, which is rarely found on Earth. Most iron meteorites are generally composed of between 90 and 95 percent iron, while the rest is composed of nickel, iridium, gallium and occasionally gold. More tests are underway to see if the meteorite contains rare elements.

Mazurek says that when he sells the meteorite, he will donate part of the money to the university. Whatever the amount she ends up donating, Sirbescu said her students, the university and herself have already been beneficiaries of the find.
