A 23-year-old man in South Carolina was ordered to spend 12 years behind bars after officials said he "bit" his ex-girlfriend's lip so hard it fell off, officials said.

Seth Aaron Fleury pleaded guilty on Thursday to an assault and assault charge of a high and aggravated nature, 13th Circuit Attorney Walt Wilkins announced in a press release.
On October 21, 2017, Fleury was scheduled to meet with his ex-girlfriend to "discuss their relationship," Wilkins said. However, it resulted in a disagreement.
Fleury was upset when her former partner did not want to be with him again and tried to kiss her, the press release said.
"She pulled away and he bit his lower lip with such force that his lip was amputated," the press release said, after which he fled the area.

Doctors tried to rejoin her lip during "emergency plastic surgery," but her attempts were unsuccessful, Wilkins said. The female now suffers "permanent, serious scars and a permanent and limited range of motion in the mouth," says the press release.
"This case demonstrates the unique circumstances in which domestic violence occurs and how quickly these situations can turn into violence," Wilkins said in the news release. "We hope that this prison sentence will make it clear to both this defendant and other abusers that domestic violence will not be tolerated in any way."
Fleury will not qualify for parole until at least 85 percent of his prison sentence is completed, according to the press release.
