The lioness of the Indianapolis Zoo kills the father of her three puppies

A lioness at the Idianápolis Zoo fatally attacked the lioness that fathered her three cubs on Monday, according to several reports.
The lioness, Zuri, was seen holding the lion, Nyack, by the neck, suffocating him to death, zoo officials said Friday.
Zuri and Nyack had been together at the zoo for eight years, with no reports of assault, they noted.
They became the parents of three puppies three years ago, and seemed compatible from the time Nyack, who was 10 years old, arrived at the zoo on loan from the San Diego Zoo. According to the Miami Herald.
Zoo employees heard a commotion early on Monday, before it opened to the public, and they saw Zuri attacking Nyack, with one of his puppies near them.
The workers tried to separate the lions, but Zuri continued to grab Nyack's neck until he no longer moved, The Herald reported.
The zoo announced the death of Nyack in his Facebook page on Friday.
"We do not know what was the precursor of the fight," the zoo curator, said David Hagen, according to WIBC. "They had been together for eight years and during that time they had done very well together."
He said the workers are upset about the loss.
"He was a friendly and playful lion."
Nyack will be cremated. A necropsy showed that the cause of death was asphyxia.
