The latest weapon: Are Navy Super Hornets armed with SM-6 missiles?

In the Navy's recent budget request, the Navy finally financed the design and acquisition of compliant fuel tanks for the Super Hornet. With the potential to expand the Hornet's range with an external low-resistance fuel tank, tanks can expand the range of a Super Hornet or free two high-capacity weapon stations by replacing the two external tanks currently used in almost All flights. Since the withdrawal of the Tomcat from the carriers' decks in 2006, the Navy has lacked an interceptor with the ability to attack targets capable of transporting long-range cruise missiles. With the death of the Soviet Naval Bombing Force at the end of the Cold War, there has not been a country capable of operating more than a handful of cruise missiles carrying bombers. In recent years, the scope of the threat has changed dramatically, as Soviet operations have expanded and the strength of Chinese bombers has been modernized with the introduction of the Badger H-6K. The Navy does not have an interceptor capable of shooting the archer before he shoots his arrows. A Super Hornet with three external fuel tanks and a total air interception load of 6 AIM-120D has a fairly limited effective combat radius of around 400 miles. As a result, the maximum interaction range of the Super Hornet / AIM-120D combination is smaller than the Tomcat / Phoenix combination of the 1990s.

The Navy currently has two products in development that can address this new threat from long-range cruise missiles: the Super Hornet Block III with compliant fuel tanks and the SM-6 Dual II missile. The Block III III Super Hornet under development will include conforming fuel tanks that will allow the Block III Hornet to have a greater combat radius while freeing high capacity weapons stations 4 and 8. A Block III Hornet with fuel tanks Conformants may carry 4 SM-6 Dual II missiles and 6 AIM-120D missiles along with a single external fuel tank at weapon station 6 to a 510-mile combat radius.
The SM-6 Dual II missile currently under development by the Navy is capable of attacking aerial and surface targets at a range of 130 miles when launched from the surface. The missile is approximately 15 feet long and 1,800 pounds, and can therefore be accommodated in four weapon stations of the Super Hornet, weapon stations 3, 4, 8 and 9. In a Block II Super Hornet, weapon stations 4, 6, and 8 are normally occupied by external fuel tanks, but in a Hornet Horn III, with weapon stations 4 and 8 released, an SM-6 can be transported in the 4 stations mentioned above.
The qualification process of the SM-6 Dual I to be transported in a Super Hornet must not be unnecessarily complex. The SM-6's predecessor, the SM-1, was modified similarly from a naval SAM to an air transport configuration. This process took about two years to create an operational product. The SM-6 has been designed to be easily updated through software updates, as demonstrated by the newly-enabled ability to attract surface targets. Captain Michael Ladner, program manager, told USNI News in 2014 that several new missions could be added through software-only updates. In addition to being easily reconfigurable, it has been demonstrated that the SM-6 works with the combat data links of the Navy through the participation of an air target that uses objective data provided by an F-35 in 2016. A brief process of development would allow the SM-6 to be qualified for the use of Super Hornet in 2020.
There are some additional benefits that go beyond providing a counter-attack to the emerging threat of long-range cruise missile projectiles. In the first instance, the SM-6 would provide a larger range air-to-air missile than the AIM-120D and would help close the gap between the AIM-120D and the larger Chinese and Russian AAMs that are in development or just in service The SM-6 would also provide a more effective anti-ship weapon for the Super Hornet. However, it is a smaller warhead than the Harpoon, the SM-6 offers a much larger kinetic beat than the AGM-84 Harpoon subpop because of its Mach 4 speed, it is more resistant to the modern CIWS system due to its high speed and longer range If the SM-6 was purchased in large quantities for air use, the unit cost of the missiles would be drastically reduced and the missile could be purchased in larger quantities for use in the original SAM function. In addition, the use of the SM-6 in the Super Hornet would potentially allow the Super Hornet to expand the range of participation of a carrier attack group in the role of BMD.
