The largest known bird
After decades of contradictory evidence and numerous investigations, scientists from the Institute of Zoology of the Zoological Society of London (ZSL) in the United Kingdom seem to have finally closed the debate on the "biggest bird" of the world ", understood as a bird proper and not an animal in a primitive evolutionary phase. An extinct bird finally identified as belonging to a species which has been given the name of Vorombe titan, has adopted the title to reach weights of up to 800 kilograms and heights of three meters. The research has also discovered an unexpected diversity in these creatures of Madagascar.
Before the new research, up to 15 different species of birds popularly called "elephant birds" had been identified under two genera. However, the results of the study carried out by the team of James Hansford, of the ZSL, provide new rigorous and quantitative evidences that show that, in fact, this is not the case. A meticulous analysis of hundreds of elephant bird bones from museums around the globe has brought to light in all its magnitude the largest bird in the world, revealing at the same time that its taxonomy actually extends over three genera and at least four different species; this is therefore the first taxonomic re-evaluation of the family in more than half a century.

The elephant birds (belonging to the family Aepyornithidae) are an extinct group of colossal birds unable to fly that roamed Madagascar and that became extinct after the arrival of prehistoric human settlers. As far as is known, these elephant birds persisted until a few centuries ago.
