Archaeologists from the ancient city of Pompeii discovered the undisturbed skeletons of a small group of people who took refuge from the devastating eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD.
The Roman city was devastated after the eruption as Pompeii was quickly buried by volcanic ash, killing some 2,000 inhabitants of the city, according to History.com.
The director of the archaeological site of Pompeii, Massimo Osanna, told the Italian news agency ANSA on Wednesday that the skeletons were still intact, that they had not been disturbed, despite the looting on the site centuries ago.

Osanna called it "a shocking find, but also very important for the story".

The bones, which are believed to be those of two women and three children, were discovered inside a house with a coal inscription that historians say it dates from the deadly eruption until October, two months later than previously thought.
Archaeologists believe that people sought safety in a small room, but that they were broken when the roof collapsed or burned.

The skull of a victim, crushed by tiles, is found next to the upper and lower extremities of another individual, according to a Facebook publication For officers at the archaeological site.

Archaeologists believe that the room offered refuge from the first stage of the eruption, when lapilli, or fragments of rock, rained down on Pompeii. "They were later caught in one of the pyroclastic flows that overwhelmed the rooms of the house," officials said in the Facebook post. This caused the collapse of the roof and the top of the north wall of the room, they added.
The site of the ancient city remained intact for more than 1,500 years until its rediscovery in the 18th century. During the nineteenth century, archaeologists used plaster to extract the voids that surrounded the skeletons that are in the compacted layer of ash. Abandoned by the decay of the organic remains, the vacuum cleaners offer a mysterious image of the last moments of the victims. National Geographic notes The real postures of the plaster casts show some victims, for example, crawling or sitting with their heads in their hands.
EXTRAORDINARY DISCOVERY OF POMPEII: RACEHORSE REMAINS FOUND BETWEEN THE RUINS OF THE ANCIENT CITY
The newly discovered skeletons are just the latest fascinating discovery in Pompeii.
Earlier this year, images of a man's skeleton, seemingly crushed by a rock during the ancient eruption of Mount Vesuvius, became viral after his discovery. Archaeologists also recently unearthed the final resting place of an old racehorse among the ruins of Pompeii.
A new study recently. revealed that when Mount Vesuvius erupted, the intense heat caused the skulls of the victims to explode and their blood to boil.
