The GOSAT-2 satellite launched





Japan launched a new Earth observation mission on October 29. An H-2A (202) (F40) rocket left Tanegashima at 04:08 UTC, carrying the GOSAT-2 satellite (Ibuki-2) and five other minor cargoes on board.



The GOSAT-2 (Greenhouse Gases Observating Satellite) has been built by the Mitsubishi company for the JAXA agency. It weighs 1,750 kg and will operate from a heliosynchronic orbit of 670 km altitude. Its instruments will allow to measure the presence of greenhouse gases in the Earth's atmosphere, in the infrared to ultraviolet bands.



Other smaller ones traveled with this satellite. The Khalifasat is owned by the United Arab Emirates, weighs 330 kg and will obtain images of the Earth's surface. The Diwata-2 is Filipino, weighs 56 kg and will also photograph our planet. The other satellites are Japanese: the Ten-Koh weighs 22 kg and will measure the degradation of materials in space; the Aoi is a 1 kg cubesat to photograph the stars; and the AUTCube-2 is another cubesat, 1.6 kg, for astronomical observations.
