According to reports, a Texas girl was hospitalized after being bitten by an asp caterpillar.

While playing outside at daycare this week, Lauren Chambers told NBC 5 her 5-year-old daughter, Adrie, was bitten by the fuzzy asp caterpillar, also known as the southern flannel moth or puss caterpillar.
The creature probably fell from a tree on the girls' arm, which caused a painful sting that forced Adrie to be hospitalized, reported NBC 5.
Although they may appear soft, the spongy-looking "hair" of the asp actually hides small, sharp spines that "stick to the skin" National Geographic reported in 2014.
"A cat caterpillar bite feels like a bee sting, only worse. "The pain gets worse immediately and quickly after being bitten, and can even make your bones hurt," said Don Hall, an entomologist at the University of Florida, at the time.
Although nursery workers quickly removed the encrusted spines from the child's arm by removing them with tape, the bite caused pain and swelling, Chambers said.

Although Chambers told NBC 5 that he had never heard of asp caterpillars before his daughter's incident, "they are common in many trees and plants we have in North Texas ... in oaks, even in roses." Michael Merchant, an entomologist at Texas A & M, told the news station.
Fortunately, however, Merchant said that these creatures will disappear as the weather continues to cool before winter.
