In a startling revelation, FBI Director Christopher Wray told the Senate National Security Committee on Wednesday that agents are conducting thousands of investigations into terrorism around the world.
"Right now, while I'm sitting here, we're investigating some 5,000 cases of terrorism in the United States and around the world, and a thousand such cases are local violent extremists and are in all 50 states," Wray said in his prepared testimony. . .

"National security remains the FBI's top priority and counterterrorism remains a primary concern, but that threat has changed significantly since September 11," Wray said.

Russell Travers, the interim director of the National Counterterrorism Center, also testified at the hearing and said the United States has "almost 20 ISIS network branches ranging from hundreds to thousands worldwide."
"Our database of terrorist identities has expanded by more than an order of magnitude since 2003," he added.
